  1. Re:Poor methodology on Performance Tests Show Early Windows 7 Build Beats Vista · · Score: 2, Insightful

I agree that synthetic CPU benchmarks are not the way to go - most CPU time is wasted waiting for user input, so a more responsive UI (which the Win7 builds have absolutely had) is a much better benchmark. But the "compare it to XP" test isn't a good usability benchmark either.

Users hate change. To get anything done, you need to shove it down their throats and anger them - hence the anger at the move to Vista and, among other things, a true multi-user security model. But even in pure UI terms, a lot of people will complain because "it doesn't work exactly the way it did in XP". That's too bad. It's called progress. The UI is more responsive and more intuitive, and yet people will continue to complain. (See: Office 2007)

While this could no doubt lead to some more interesting shooter games (a welcome change since it's been a while since an FPS not made by Valve has really struck me as top-grade), I'd personally be more curious to see the difference in engagement across genres - FPS, RTS, RPG, etc. I know that I personally get much more engaged into RPGs.

Do you really believe that nothing like this exists on Mac or Linux? Not necessarily this specific exploit, but something of this severity. Neither Apple nor the various Linux/OSS developers have anywhere near the testing unit that Microsoft has to uncover these flaws, nor do they have anywhere near the level of real-world users testing their software. It's not possible to write software of this level and complexity 100% bug-free. It's a matter of how much time and testing it takes to find such bugs.

While at DefCon, stay away from the ATMs and if at all possible stay away from the network entirely.

Because TCP and UDP headers aren't of fixed sizes and as such are incredibly difficult to handle in hardware. Hardware switching has been tried - ATM for instance - but it's not that simple. TCP/IP was designed as a software protocol, and it's an unfortunate reality that some protocols are easily handled in hardware and others are not.

IPv6 makes some steps towards having simpler hardware handling, but as long as IPv4 is still around, we won't see hardware switching become commonplace.

Even the lousy iPod headphones provide better isolation than most cheap headphones in their pricerange nowadays. Will they isolate as well as a Sennheiser HD-280 or a pair of canalphones? No. But they hardly isolate "much worse" than other phones.
