You left out something. Once they realize you are weaker they don't stop harassing you simply because they know they can harass you. Because there's a fight, win or lose, doesn't mean it will stop there, and often just escalated everything. I don't know the kind of fights you had but 30 years ago a fight, single or gang, often ended in hospital time for the loser and/or target. Honor??!! Get this, it's not about honor or the locals, just whatever ego/control game the jackass(es) is(are) playing.
Think you're not do you? Look around, many governments alone are this way. Economies as well, starting with our favorite. Anyone know any non-corrupt local sheriffs, school boards, parents not-killing each other over the accomplishments of their children. Let's not forget religion. I'm sure there's plenty of examples in the everyday news to remind us how little everything has changed. Civilization does have more opportunities and virtualizes the effects away from just life and death and in many ways its better for that. In some ways its worse, somehow I can't find it all that civilized to knock someone down, keep them down, and then make them live with it for the rest of their natural life. In the old days, you died or they killed you, end of torture. The latter seems a little more humane to me somehow.
"What do you expect Michale Dell to say? That Windows 7 is crap?"
That would be different, wouldn't it? A CEO that actually cares about his customers more than profits. Of course, a good segment of the population would probably die, the ones that actually believed him anyway as the shock of an honest CEO would be just too much. Yang of Yahoo not withstanding.
"What happens if you mix plot and anti-plot together?!"
"Battlefield Earth."
Which one? The movie or the book. I thought the book was good, I first read it in the eighties and pull it out every so often just for fun and when I can afford to read straight through(3 days or so). The book's pretty tough too having survived two tornados and three major moves. The movie pretty much sucked.
"They want the student to solve the problem and not the calculator. "
Then how about going back to slide rules and wrote calculations. Thereby doing away with the problem and guaranteeing more intelligent students that will actually know what they are talking about because they will have to work out the whole problem. Nevermind be better at it through constant practice.
Except it's been made public without a judicial decision of guilt. The problem with media reporting is accusations are on page one in big print while exonerations are on page 100 in fine print right below the sewer repair permits. Lets hear it for overreaction. Hence guilty until proven innocent.
Why hasn't any member of the slashdot populace fixed this already. Oh yea, they're just a bunch of whiny geeks with no balls. If there's any actual hackers left, take care of this problem already. Seems you already know what to do. Damn bunch of whiny brats.
"Stallman does seem to only see the world in black and white (or not-free and free in this case)."
The law works that way too as it's often the gray areas that get you in trouble. Same with software. I don't see why RMS wouldn't want to steer us away from the cliff.
"as that simply undermines those people working to improve the situation."
Are they really improving it? Remember microsoft is a dictatorship, not a democracy. The little guys on the bottom are just being used to make inroads into the enemy. The real decisions still stay with the top which has already decided that Open Source and the Free Software Foundation are the enemy. We're just looking are the cold war at the software level, that's all. Which side is which is an exercise for the reader.
About what? Someone collecting a pile of publicly available government records. What could they be used for that's nefarious? It's good the FBI was on the stick this time, but it was a non-issue and a waste of taxpayer money to investigate. Somehow paying a fee to get something that I've already paid for and legally required to have access to seems little more than bullshit. Besides the valuation is more bullshit as it's point of view, just an excuse to have an investigation. Unfortunately the fee system is too ingrained to ever get rid of.
"Friends' Ubuntu installations were rarely updated due to the limited attention received by the little icon. With the new [minimised] update window, the machines updated weekly.
It all comes down to visibility. "
Or harrassment. Updates are often coming out, prioritizing definitely helps the annoyance factor. A big window popping up in front of everything isn't always going to get kudos(interruptions) but at least you're getting told outright and blatantly about updates and other pending issues. Just depends on how many popups a week we're talking about.
When they respect my time, I will. Remember the user is getting alot of free time and effort, coming part way isn't asking to much unless they're spoiled little babies.
A good example is the freebsd ports system. It works well but after an install it doesn't tell you what the names of the executable files are so you can get a man page on them or insert them into a menu. And no, the file name isn't always the same as the portname.
Seems an obvious reason to stop using vista. Don't forget to scream to the rooftops why so microsoft/apple will have a chance to ignore you. Maybe the rest of the lazy/self-serving public will get the message.
"Best guess is that he DID have a small patch of seed corn contaminated with the RR variant, but instead of destroying it and claiming damages from his neighbor, he selectively harvested it and planted another seed crop with it. Which is illegal, and he knew it. But since the story had the words "Monsanto", "GMO", "contaminated", and "farmer" in it, we wound up with most people forming opinions like the GP. If it would have been one of Monsanto's other patented but NOT GMO strains, the story wouldn't have gone farther than the local grange newsletter."
Except Monsanto knew the pollen would blow and contaminate other peoples fields. The fact he replanted is irrelevant at that stage as Monsanto is giving defacto permission for it to be used by giving it away(blowing) with the intention to contaminate everyone's elses fields.
How does he know they're libelous posters? They might just be cops who otherwise might end up dead if discovered. Saying they're libelous doesn't make it so, just an excuse to roll back criticism protections. If the chief wants to deal with critics just increase accountability and make public all department financial and operational data and really advertise it. If he's got nothing to hide and as a public official he shouldn't, otherwise, he shouldn't be there. There's nothing criminal about stating an incorrect opinion or impersonating in public, just actionable on a civil level. If it were criminal, advertisers/marketers would be jailed for life, politicians/religious leaders would be on death row, and all potential lawyers/businesspeople would be executed instantly.
It's your fault if you accept unverified information. The only way to really fight without violating various legally accepted rights is to put out as much verified information as possible.
You forgot that not everyone has the bandwidth for this graphical crap. The cities mostly yes, out here in the sticks no. Please just give me html so I can actually get some work done and not wait 2 minutes per page transition.

"Ok, now get a fulltime job, and find a girlfriend who isn't cheating on you."
Let me know if you ever find both of those that are worth a shit. And is there such a thing as a girlfriend who isn't cheating on you?

Screw linux! Does the replacement run *bsd?
Where is that credit due exactly?

"His FOIA was approved, of course, and he received the FBI's partially redacted report on himself."
It's on him for him. Exactly what's in there to redact that he shouldn't know about himself or what the government knows about him?
"the government got suspicious"

Don't forget some beer and popcorn. Maybe a taser just in case.

Try plan9, you may feel a little better.
"GNOME: beer & smokes"
A few beers before every decision. Who has to see the screen to code.
"KDE: blackjack & hookers"
Blackjack for every decision, the hookers wrote the code.
"* New, non-Linux kernel and OS - is this an advantage? Not necessarily but it sure is cool. It's a microkernel, too."
"The Haiku kernel is a multi-threaded, modular hybrid kernel based on Travis Geiselbrecht's NewOS." [haiku.org]
No, it's not a microkernel.
