Maybe because these are not PDAs with keyboards? It may not be enough to run the latest games, but the Atom-based 901 is gutsy enough to do real-time audio mixing and software synthesis. I can run EZdrummer through my external ASIO sound card without skipping, and with plenty of RAM and CPU to spare. That makes it the perfect device for DJs or anyone else who needs an ultra-portable computer for media-related tasks.

Also a Cox cable subscriber in the Phoenix area. Also happen to wear an abuse hat for one of Arizona's internet companies. If all ISPs were as good as Cox, I probably wouldn't need to do this job. As it is, I make enough to pay Cox for a business-class connection so I have access to port 25, and consider the money well-spent. Also, at that tier a real English-speaking human picks up the support line in a ring or two.

The smallest size of these aluminum cookie sheets fits perfectly under a Macbook. It even fits in my laptop case. I bought some rubber adhesive pads to stick on the bottom. The nice thing about this solution is that it doesn't insulate the laptop and cause it to overheat. It absorbs the heat, and spreads it out. The tray still feels warm, but you don't get a painful hot spot.

  5. Re:What about fan noise? on World's Most Powerful Subwoofer · · Score: 1
It is a variable-pitch-in-motion fan. The fan blades swivel to change the amount of air moving through it. These are used in industrial applications to allow reverse-flow. In this case they're apparently driving the actuator from the subwoofer signal. The maximum frequency will be limited by how fast the blades can open and close.

There's remarkably little information here. What is that max speed and max frequency? Do they use a full-reversible fan or just vary between open and closed? What's the max air flow? By way of comparison my conventional 2 x 12" SV subwoofer displaces a max of 5 liters per stroke. (I never turn it up more than about a quarter of the way, and it shakes the whole house.) Multiply that by 2 per cycle (5 liters forward, 5 liters back), by 40 cycles per second, and it's pushing 400 liters of air every second. That's about 850 cubic feet per minute. If they're actually reversing the fan they'll need a 425 cfm fan to equal my sub. (Although my sub is never run that hard.) Looking around, that's about the size of a server-rack fan, which matches up to what we see in the pictures.

If the max air flow is relatively low, they don't have to run the fan very fast. Slow tip speeds means low noise, so it might not actually be that bad. Since it's not firing directly into the room, they're probably lining the enclosure with high-frequency absorbant foam to damp the fan noise. The low frequency waves won't be affected.

But all in all, I think you can get better performance from a conventional sub for significantly less $ unless you really need frequencies below 18-20 Hz.

  8. Re:Browncoat on Serenity Opens Today · · Score: 2, Interesting
I think Whedon did that deliberately, wanting to leave some moral ambiguity there. He mentioned when the show first came on TV that he was patterning the crew of Serenity after the Confederates who lost the Civil War, and later became pioneers in the American west, trying to make new lives for themselves after their dreams of a separate, slave-holding nation were shattered. The Confederates were not completely innocent victims. It's never made clear in Firefly what exactly the Rebels were fighting for. It's probably not slavery, but it doesn't necessarily have to be completely righteous, either.

Unfortunately, Joss never went on to explore that possibility. The series went on to become standard white-hats-vs-black-hats. The crew never does anything or says anything to make viewers question their values, and we never really get to see the Alliance side of the story. It's too bad. That would have made an interesting and challenging TV show.

Of course you expect it. Or you should. As Joss often reminds us, the crew of the Serenity are the bad guys! Outlaws! Desperados!

Except, you never actually see them acting like anything but perfect little boy scouts. They even give the proceeds of their train robbery back. Yawn. And when he finally does kill, it's only out of self defense. Mal Reynolds is about as bad as my Amish grandma. Even she could shoot a fox that was going after her chickens.

I did see it. Have you ever seen 'A Clockwork Orange'? Probably not, or you'd have a whole different standard for how that kind of scene can be written and acted. This sort of thing is not new or unique. 'A Clockwork Orange' is probably older than you are.

  11. Re:What's the deal? on Serenity Opens Today · · Score: 0, Troll
    No, you're not alone.

The hype and mystique is due to the fact that most of Joss Whedon's fans are media illiterates. Most of them are younger, or have only read and watched science fiction. They don't have a frame of reference to compare it to or see its failings, so they see the quips and snark and think it's good writing. Meanwhile, even an old western like Bonanza was grittier and more daring.

Sometimes I wonder if Firefly fans have ever seen anything but science fiction.

Malcolm Reynolds killing a man who has clearly stated an intention to do him harm is only some kind of revolution in TV writing if you haven't watched Tony Soprano strangle, shoot, and beat people to death every Sunday for the last 5 years.

  13. Re:Violence: Europe vs. USA vs. Japan on Dissecting U.S. Violent Game Bills · · Score: 1
When we do the graph for Europe, do we get to keep two world wars and genocide? And in the Japanese graph, do we take into account the fact that when a father in Japan loses his job and hacks up his wife and two kids it's counted as four suicides, resulting in a "suicide" rate higher than the U.S.'s suicide and murder rates combined?

If not, it's only fair to point out that the seemingly high crime rate in the U.S. is almost entirely a result of the war on (some) drugs, and that if you don't deal drugs or associate with those who do, your chances of getting murdered are basically non-existent.
