i never used 8, but 9 and 10 I didn't see that big of a difference to me. Don't mis-understand features are a different thing, but the database architecture itself seemed almost stagnant. What did I miss? You seem like you have used it more then I have... what did was the major architectural change that wasn't just a application feature?
We have all heard the phrase, "Money makes the world go round." Commercial encyclopedias are driven by commercial interests, and if there is a problem people stop buying the product. If you disagree with whats written then don't buy it. If offers agree with you they stop buying and tell others, but if the users agree well then it stays. Its called capitalism, the free market, etc (it works, just ask CBS News, they are learning the hard way). This is why Britannica, World Book, Funk & Wagnels have all have held different positions in the market. There is accountability, and it's the most important kind, its financial. It doesn't have the weakness of a "free for all".
This is the concern; some "jackass" can in essence put anything they want until a theoretical "expert" comes along to correct it. What happens to all the people who used the jackass's information? How about if the jackass claims to be the expert against someone else who really is? What if someone who was respected changes their mind, maybe MS gave him money to spread FUD. Whatever you want to say the reason, it will/does happen.
"Money makes the world go round." Wikipedia is driven by people with good/bad/whatever intentions, but there is no real penalty for bad information or agenda driven info. The only penalty is that a pet project doesn't make it big, but the main motivator in life, feeding you and your family, roof over your head, etc. isn't hurt in the slightest. Again, in a perfect worls it would work, but we live in the reality that people and the world aren't perfect.
Wikipedia is a neat idea, a hobby, and fun, but you can't honestly say that it should replace a real encyclopedia. If you want to make the case that it is a cool addition to one, ok, I can see that I guess, but certainly not a replacement.
Fair enough, I'm not really familiar with doomsayers, and thought it was slang/typo for something like naysayer's.
But as one final thought on the subject and I'll stop posting... you are a part of the wikipedia community and your response certainly reinforces my first post. Nobody could expect anything less from you then to defend your agenda, wikipedia, but you didn't defend it by providing any evidence that my statement was in accurate.
Obviously I believe it is accurate, but had hoped for some thought provoking perspective from the opposing side... something that is a bit more stable then attacking the current commercial encyclopedias like Britannica. Better luck next time I guess.
Definitely a cog. Oracle is too much database for most companies anyways, that aside. Oracle really is betting against MySQL not getting good enough to compete at their level. If there is one thing you can learn from OSS history is that it will eventually catch up to commercial and put out a good product. It just takes time. Unless Oracle has a big trick up its sleeve, its relational database hasn't gotten much more impressive over the years. Maybe they are going to introduce a new architecture? In anycase I think its a bad bet for Oracle.
I've debated people here and they use wikipedia facts that were wrong as proof they were right. It drove me crazy... he wouldn't take any other source no matter how many, wikipedia was the spoken word. Yikes.
In a perfect world wikipedia would work, but people aren't perfect, and people have agendas... that is why it will never be taken seriously with anyone outside the community.
I mean seriously. I read it, but it sounded allot more like hysteria and a creative conspiracy theory than anything else.
The reason Linux isn't in demand by users is because of software. People in small business need lots of special industry software that is only written for windows. Morally right or wrong is another debate. On the flip side, Linux is to complicated for average home user. Manufactures invest in developing hardware for Windows because that is what is in demand by the public.
But more directly to the article; did it ever cross anyone's mind that manufactures (like dell for instance) pay more to support the drivers when testing for linux before they deploy it on their machines. Machines get big $$ thrown at them before they make it to the production line, and lots of that money is spent on how the OS runs on it.
How about the end-user support calls with linux? Some of you are forgetting that Manufactures get calls for every little thing from changing a background to why does is it crash to what's my password. Linux is more overhead for manufactures. You can't honestly say that the average computer user will find Linux easier to use then Windows today. Forget if they started with Linux, they didn't, they most likely started with Windows, and they use Windows at work. Go ahead and scream windows spyware and viruses, but people are already comfortable with windows. Right or wrong, that's just the way it is... sorry to disappoint.
First MS releases an innovative wireless software with source. Then Google screws with privacy and Apple becomes "evil" and screws some vendors. Yikes! The/. Crew most not be happy today!
Is Google going to become "EVIL"? Could the Media darling status eventually fade away, could the honeymoon pass, and could their stock be held to the same standards as other business (e.g. the dot-bomb model failed for a reason).... What will happen next?
Oh boy I can't wait to see. By the way, has anyone read the Gator privacy policy lately? Did Google copy a few lines?
Go ahead, flame me. I'm not trying to troll; it's just my warped sense of humor i guess.
many/.ers must be getting ready to jump off some bridges. Just kidding, I'm sure you'll come up with something saying MS stole it from your favorite open source developer.
MS and Windows is not all Bad. Not to mention how much software is avaialable for special industry only on windows not linux or macs.
Most of us can't, and don't really want to "just say no". For example I have clients that are lawyers and doctors that are very happy with their windows software.
Stuff that isn't available in linux. The just say no or linux only group always propose stuff for you to get by without ms, but some of us need to do more then use word and excel, or don't want some custom jerry rigged solution.
I just tried it and really don't see anything to special about it. The usb thing is kinda cool, but its not the only app that can run without being installed on a machine. Why is a big deal?
whenever there is a firefox exploit,/. is understanding, and people say things like "well no software is perfect... its rare and hard to do, not really an explot... ". When there is an IE exploit its, "MS Sucks, IE Sucks, and if you use IE your computer is going to blow up, not to mention global warming will continue"...
I exaggerated a bit there, but you know what I'm saying. Why not offer equal critiques, and understanding, for any product regardless. I have a few macs for web testing but don't really like them, but it doesn't stop me from saying that there are some things that apple does a damm good job with. IE isn't a horrible web browser, it may not be as cutting edge with functionality today as firefox, but it isn't all bad. And before you scream standards, only do it if you include safari, and all the other browsers that have "standards" problems.
I was hired as a consultant for a company that is doing some Xbox Live Arcade games for MS's new 360. They are a startup and don't want to go head to head with the big guns, but arcade gave them an outlet where they can start out and build a reputation, and hopefully get some good reviews about them.
I think this is an area where MS is helping the little guy, and increasing competition in the industry. I also think this will help MS targeted the "less sophisticated" soccer moms with simple cheap games. From what I've seen sony really doesn't have a viable strategy to compete with this approach. I don't know about Nintendo, but my guess is that the small guys will be able to develop for revolution and to ok.
To be fair those types of quotes really are from Britian, American, and Autralian politicians. Not many in India are on the record saying anything close to that.
Admittedly I'm not the biggest fan of google, but they have driven innovation that really impact society using the world wide web. The google maps/satellite functionality is a perfect example.
The "informative" response that the maps are already publicly available really exposes how ignorant the people in charge truly are. Yikes!
The only thing I'm surprised about is that the EU hasn't decided to create a "global" organization to control google, and informed us in the U.S. that google doesn't comply they will ban it and create their own search engine and tools.
The answer of course is TEN. as in the word "TEN". Count the lines used to spell the word (taking in account that this is Time New Roman, and should be something like an ARIAL.)
Wow, could there be any larger in your face privacy violations then this? "Hey we are going to track all our citizens in real-time. Don't worry its only for traffic... until a divorce lawyer subpoenas the logs for his case"
When the northern ice caps melt then the cold water starts to cool the ocean, and there would be fewer hurricanes. That is what the environmentalists told us all during the 80's and 90's. How come we have had the terrible hurricanes this year and last... Why is it happening if the ice caps are melting? How about explaining Antarctica's glaciers getting larger? http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn1806
Take a few hours and read about how much crap volcanoes spew into the environment (e.g. sulfur dioxide). Do some Google searches on how many erupt each year... compare that with our fossil burning. The environmentalists have always been pretty disappointed with the results. Don't forget to include the ocean volcanoes when you do it.
Still think we are causing global warning? Remember the Ice Age? Scientists are starting to dispute whether or not an asteroid caused it. Where were we with our wicked cars then? We all know that Solar activity had been written off as crap until recently when the numbers were just to obvious... the environmentalists account for it now by saying that ONLY 10-30% of the warning is being caused by the sun.
I just wish you guys would preface all your "we are killing the earth" talk with, hey we really don't know, but we THINK "we are killing the earth". I certainly will ay I don't know for sure, but the evidence isn't cut and dry in your favor. The media is, but not the facts. Just some food for though. I know I'm going to get slammed for this post, the same way I do when I defend MS, but hey what can ya do?
The radical increase in video card graphics and price drops is going to occur simply because of Vista. OSX is a tiny market and won't have much of an impact on sales of video cards. OSX driving down the costs of the video card market is retarded, and really shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as Vista. The volume is so far from ever being comparable, it's just absurd. You can offer some wishful thinking on your part that MACTEL is going to take out windows, but even the Mac worlds Holy Grail Quark is starting to place bets on Vista and its XML model, go read some of their articles on www.quark.com. But I digress.
My point was that we are going to get more power for less money because Vista is being released... You can criticize Vista and say it sucks because it needs so much power, that Microsoft is satan, whatever, but the fact remains that cards like this one are being developed quickly... all in anticipation for Vista that comes out next year. All of which the mass consumer will benefit from.

Verizo started to offer 768k DSL this month for 14.95 a month. This is going to drive adoption, and prices down quickly.

this piece says that ms is trying to seed the indie ecosystem too. http://www.businessweek.com/innovate/content/oct20 05/id20051014_827471.htm

I loved this on in grade school. Doesn't apply prefectly to a math problem, but was a fun riddle.
MAKE TEN BY ADDING THESE FIVE LINES TO THE LINES BELOW: | | | | |

Of course all of you know the answer. But I'll post it in a reply to this.

as much as you guys hate microsoft, they are going to be driving higher performance graphic cards with the release of Vista.
Tivo charges too much, and with all the software coming out for PCS, Tivo is going to go by the way side.
The AMD beating Intel post noted something very interesting, the majoity of the sales were HP Windows Media Center PCs.
I think it would be fitting for Tivo to be burried next to WebTV.
