  1. Carnivore -- Warrant invalidation . . . on Slashback: Imagination, Evasion, Watermarks · · Score: 2

So the test begins. With a proxied Netscape browser we find proxy.foo.com and slightly obscure our information and change our hostname to whatever@wherever.com. In theorum mail is being sniffed to the account in question johndoe@sampleisp.com in which they have their warrant and not whatever@wherever.com which makes any information they gather obsolete. Well, after some legal mumbo jumbo obsoletes their methods and what information they gathered along with the terms of the warrant.

The DOJ and assorted federal branches have been pushing for greater liberties in pursuing 'cyber-criminals' including the extension of warrants to include all computers connected to the network through which the data could have traveled.

Even if they can't get something from your own ISP, they may soon be able to get it from another computer.

though it's closed source . . . the one that I picked up after trying UOX was GrayWorld (later TUS and now Sphere). They actually have released a (beta) of a redone client as well. Didn't the UOX site have a page of links to numerous other projects?

  5. Re:Graphics will stay the same on Everquest Server Emulator In Beta · · Score: 3

They're trying to emulate Everquest . . . It will look the same

    (correct, afaik).

They wrote an eq server, which should have nothing to do with the quality of the graphics. If the servers did, it would clog up the bandwidth. The way this probably works (and all the UO servers did) was read the old files. All it is is a server, not a completely repackaged client as well.

although, fwiw . . . if you want to improve the graphics, crack their format (I don't have eq, but am assuming that it isn't just a straightforward known standard?) and change them. As long as you don't don't change it too dramatically, I'm guessing it would still work . . .

  6. Re:Contracts? on Non-Decision On Toysmart.com · · Score: 3

I would think that the threat of a lawsuit could put pressure on toysmart to not sell the info.

First off, they have nothing to lose, really. They are bankrupt so another lawsuit wouldn't lead to anything (nor the threat of one).

Secondly, a contract involving money is considered much more important than the ones between a single person and the company that isn't.

I was about to go as far as 'a digital contract isn't worth the paper it's signed on' but that isn't true as UCITA states . . . unfortunately, it seems that the only party that is helt to digital contracts is the party and not the companie$.

    Gotta love capitalist societies.

    What will the suits see?

Most likely, they won't see 'We alienated the developers, causing the fork.'

They'll probably see 'They took the code and ran.'

Could make companies think twice in the future . . .
