  1. Command and Conquer rED Alert on Multiplayer Games For Christmas Lull at the Office? · · Score: 1

Red Alert "Battle Pack" err something can be had cheap and comes with like 7 CDs (including spawn ability) so getting a 8 player game going isn't hard.

It plays like chess, but lacks the "wacthing paint dry" luster. Simple build, fight, destroy, requires some thought and speed.

If memory serves any high end P-1 running 95+ LAN works ok, no specific 3D support required.

I wasted way too much time playing CnC in college, but that was the DOS version and I probally couldn't build a dos based IPX boot disk anymore. :)

Westwood.COM was the publisher, but I think the are more interesting in selling RedAlert2 or games with higher system requirements.

I give the EFF 100$ a year, but only make around 1/2 of what User 956 makes.

BTW never donate to the Red Cross, they will hand over your personal medicial information to a telemarketer who will call on a mobile phone.

Twice so far, despite me complaining to the TMs & talking to the nurses who took my info.

A little harder to learn than a 3d shooter, much less than Civ.

Doesn't require much more than a really fast 486 (orginal Dos mode) or P100+ (95+ mode).

You can play teams, one on one, and all for one. Goal based games, Capture the Flag'ish, best as a basic battle game.

Games can run from 30min to several hours depending on size of map/resources. Buy the box set WorldWide Warfar @local store it comes with many CDs.

FYI, I got the same offer. Must be members only.

I declined since I had only received the Old Logo Shirt a few weeks ago, and hadn't ruined it...yet. But I do like the EFF enough to not be annoyed with the direct mail special offer.

I can't say that about the other 99% of my mail.

I can't help but to agree.

I just bought a USR v.90 in a box that that said v.92, but it did have a yellow piece of paper saying I could flash it.

I used it for a week (firmware said ?Jan 2001) and it was an improvement from my haynes accura (real early 33.6). Then ran the "total lack of control utility" and flashed upto ?March 2001 firmware. Don't get me started on how it has to be plugged in off-hook && online to update (try that when you only own one modem cable)

It take like an 20 lllllloooonnngg trys to handshake...yea quick connect my ass.

So I'm back to the old modem since I don't like to wait an hour dialing. Can't flash back, didn't offer to save old.

It worked fine as ?Jan 2001 firmware under linux, yet blows under both nt & linux. If v.92/v.90 works fine for you, don't flash it!

What I have noticed in the past is tools like turbo [x config, mouse, network, etc] ala turbolinux, are very much different than the RH tools. But the system's text config files are very similar. However I don't have high hopes that installing over anything will save all configurations, especially if the ftpd, httpd, or even mail are not the same.

I guess the question could also be, does everyone one use the same mount points? I have toyed with the idea of mounting \home on a different disk, so in theory I could hose the root \ and try different distributions.

A small web-centric and on a floppy IP-masq for modems or 2-nic lans. Doesn't seem to be much trouble, I use this at my parents house (one phone line...coax running down the hallway...non-tech users).

Lacks shell support (both local and remote) but it isn't an issue after I wrote my own web interface. The built-in one is way to complex/hard to use for novices.

Using it for about a year. Faster than teaching them ppp-on or dial-up-networking and I have only one 56k modem among 6 boxes.

    http://sharethenet.com/faq.html

Would like something more powerfull backend-wise like caching, rc5 client, X, fortune, pine, and perl. But this is faster to setup and doesn't require me to tweak/fix anything.

  13. passive on Quieting those Fans · · Score: 1

Now what about passive vs active cooling?

At home my dual pro has cheap kit fans and sinks, and dual celeron ppg has socket 7 sinks (home brew kit). Both are o/c but not by much.
The point being is that I have to be careful of how the cables/wires/fans/cards/drive-cages are arranged. Hassle.

I also have a couple of Dec-Alphas that the CPU is rated for 35w (?? been a long time since I read the directions :) ) and it uses a passive sink! No wires, no fans, just a slab of heat sink aluminum. Only one small variable speed case fan. The drives are external.

The last ibm net finity 5000 I setup had dual p3 (450?-500?) and has passive heat sinks. It also has big fans on the back side of the h/w raid and case.

If the more expensive vendors are using passive heat sinks, why not go that route? Forgeting to plug in a fan or having a fan stop is "down time" and random crashes.

Down time is bad, a forest of wires is bad, moving parts fail.

Oh yeah and passive sinks are very, very quiet with 100% up-time.
