Ive been wondering how AT&T will continute to provide CDPD support and also do GPRS. But they are moving in that direction, they have been for the last 2 years. AT&T chose the easiest route to upgrade to GSM, while other phone companies chose other technologies. GSM is the future, UK did it right. AT&T still needs to support the people who make the investment in CDPD. Very curious indeed...
Basestations use a ds0 56K frame relay connection. AT&T will have to upgrade all the cell sites with new hardware and more bandwith. At 250K cost per site, usage is a big priority factor. (*Note - Bandwith Bandwith Bandwith)
When AT&T upgrades the basestations at the end of this year to GSM we will start to see 3G products. Speeds will start at 128K then upto 768K.
WAP/Hdml will stick around for phones, but people want to view websites with html, java, vscript, shockwave, etc... 1 Bit bitmaps and text doesnt cut it.
Also if you cant wait for wireless data, check out the new CDPD phone from Mitsubishi. Its the same size a nokia, has Indeglo screen, 10 Lines of display, and a jack to hookup your laptop, 128bit encyrption. http://www.mobileaccessphone.com/products/index.ht m
Im moving to a dual or quad cpu systems soon. Will crusoe do multiple cpus? Its software based right? Soon as AMD comes out with thier quad system Im all over it. -Brook
I see motherboard support for this 800mhz rdrams, but pricewatch doesnt even list prices for it! Searching the net for a prices has been harder than finding sblive linux driver sourcecode.;) Also cant find benchmarks for motherboards running normal pc133 vs. 800mhz rdrams.
I just bought the entire Mad Magazine series on 7 cd-roms. Includes all the fold-ins too.
Oh yeah, it came with a roll of mad toilet paper too! haha, great!
Has all the cool spy vs spy, edge art, and my favorite the army guy who makes all the peace signs.. (Ops showing my age)
I just did a quick search for Don Martian, shows a list of his cartoons.. All his "DAY" cartoons, the caveman cartoons. Damn, what a shame.

Working at a Telco, I know these Y2K problems where real. Some of the things that where effected are routers, unix boxes, software applications, databases, proxies, backup servers, drive arrays, etc... I spent half of this year, updating software and flashing hardware.
*Note - Some of our (big name vendors) where releasing bug fixes as Y2K fixes. I spent more time in the Lab testing to make sure the fixes wouldn't effect my production equipment than sitting at my desk!
After this was done, we only had one Y2K problem. A date setting on an email app. THATS IT!
Was the time put to good use? YES. Things are patched, running hard, and this monday has been slow and, ahh taking a nap.;)

ps... Thank god I'm not in IT, damn windows apps need patched! Oh well, no nap...
Bad thing about these tests, is that we know NT is faster. Does that mean I want to use it in a mission critical operations? NO.
M$ Can tweak NT/W2k so it serves pages faster, but it is still unreliable for most applications...
People like to state the NT can be very stable, how many apps do you have running? How much downtime per year do you have? How much time do you spend fixing problems?
My biggest grip was you couldnt telnet into NT and restart processes. W2K has that. NT can try to become more like *nix platform, it still has a long way to go..
Im going to stick with Solaris and Apache. Im under staffed, and over worked. NT is not the answer.
Also another sad part is most E-Commerce packages are for NT.
I use a program called AT Guard that will block banner ads, and any other html string. Its a o/s based firewall thats very customizable. (ICMP,TCP,PORTS, Filters) I also edit my cookies file every so often, and delete all those nasty banner cookies.
Sprint uses SMS while AT&T uses CDPD. Problem with SMS is its connectionless, not the best choice for dispatching.
Phone.com (aka Unwired Planet) owns the market in Phone Browsers, HDML/WAP. They also have software that will convert HTML to HDML/WAP on the fly. (Check thier stock lately? PHCM)
With AT&Ts network, you can use any CDPD device, wireless modem, wireless palm pilot, or Pocketnet phone. Every device has an IP.
SMS still uses SS7, while CDPD uses IP networking. (Can you say VOIP?, SS7 Over IP?)
Dont kid yourself, the only reason we make good money is because there are few of us.. In 20 years everyone will know how to program, know 5 programming languages, be 100% computer literate, and operate any os... Why do you think we opened 100,000 visas for hitech jobs?
I work for a telco, the data side. The voice side was hourly so they switched us also. (Everyone except the SysAdmins, Poor bastards...) Salary had On Call pay which came out to about 4 hours of hourly pay. Hourly gets Time and a half, Double Time, and 2 Hour per incident pay. We normally do 5-10 hours overtime a week, so hourly was a better choice.
We didnt want to switch, but now that most of us have, all those 1am maintence windows mean more $$.
"The judge is undertaking to moderate the Usenet group, by saying who can or cannot post there, to bring to an end a six-month "flame war."
The newsgroup was not moderated, the judge should have no legal hold on this newsgroup..
"There is no doubt that an ugly flame war was involved. All sides alleged that the other parties had made death threats and threats of physical violence."
Flame wars are a necessary evil, we allow total chaos to allow all thoughts to be expressed...
The judge pointed out that all parties had used uncivilized, disgusting language that should not appear in a newsgroup.
Hello?! Does this strike anyone else as censorship? Also flame posts are not love letters...
Seattle Police Department was concerned that the flame wars would escalate into real-world physical violence if the police department and the court did not intervene.
This case is not about newsgroups, but about death threats and harassment.
If this guy was going over the edge, ready to commite violence, maybe this was the right thing to do. But as the article pointed out, it was a Flame war, not a one sided conversation. The judge needs to keep his thoughts on the person, and leave the usenet newsgroups alone. He has no right to moderate this group. Law enforcement or Judicial agencies should not post to any usenet group. Any governmental agency should not request and promote any ideas. Personal postings excluded.
Also for First Ever gag order, AOL has had a few with their newsgroups...
Ok, IS NSI going to sell a card too? Or just this chip... Now post on /. when we can get a Gigabit ether card!
I think ill pick up a few cards, and be the first to have a gigabit router at work. (Running linux baby!)
Oh wait, no drivers. (; Nah, hopefully they ship with card..
The Article is offline.. Doesnt help when a server gets /.'ed either...
I like to read the article then read the posts on slashdot. Seems to happen more often lately.
The future of OS's are geared towards SMP. AMD knows it, Intel cant make up its mind, Crusoe isnt even a contender...
:)
The GFX card manufacturs know, look at the Voodoo2 SLI or ATI Rage Fury Maxx..
It all comes down to the consumers. People want speed cheap. SMP is the answer.
If I helped to design the crusoe, it would be stackable, and let people just add cpu's for more speed. Low Mhz x 10cpu's would whoop a Ghz Pentium...
PS. Soon as AMD has its Quad system boards out, my p3-500 becomes a linux/mp3 box.
And you thought a P3 was expensive...

New winsock.dll?
Have not seen this on any beta sites. Anyone got a url about this?
Last upgrade was on win95 from winsock1.1 to winsock2.

I want to test these files out.
Wheres the power of the Internet when you need it...

Oh forgot to mention, isnt AT&T having unlimited pocketnet service for $19.99? Think that goes for wireless modems too.
Just a few thoughts...
