Are there only two mobile service providers in the US? Ouch.. things are still bad enough here in the UK even with say 6 or so major providers.

Saying one telco is no worse than another doesn't really say much at all IMO, since they all seem to be pretty evil. Charges for data rates have improved over the last few years, but they still have a ways to go with "neutrality" and open-ness. If one of them introduced a properly open network with reasonable data rates, they'd make a killing. I would probably buy a contract with them just to support the whole concept.

Thankfully I have a company paid mobile anyway so I don't really care much about pricing atm :)

The extra charge to connect to an Exchange server is also sickening. Why can't they just charge a reasonable amount per GB of data, and let people do whatever the fuck they want with it?

Sweet, so you can sue them for any downtime? We've always had "always on" internet since the days of modems (if you wanted to pay to be on all the time), so it's absurd that they could even try to claim that that's what "unlimited" means. What's the point in advertising something that basically everyone already has?

I don't know if it's covered later in the book, it would be slightly ironic if it also plays an important factor and he has overlooked it :P

  6. Re:Hackers Diet FTW. on Why Doesn't Exercise Lead To Weight Loss? · · Score: 2, Informative

IMO the whole "fat (duh)" thing is a myth - I'm not a doctor or anything but from what I've read so far, the amount of fat you can store is affected by the amount of carbs you eat at the same time. And I've been eating a relatively high fat diet for a couple of months now, with no sign of it all being dumped directly into my fat reserves. There was a whole lot of bull bandied about about fat by the US govt in the second half of the 20th century, and anyone who questions it is treated like a lunatic. Pretty much the same type of thinking that starts and perpetuates religions is happening with the whole "fat makes you fat/is bad for you" thing. Fried fats aren't very good for you, but fat in general is fine, and doesn't make you fat. Most people however just run off of carbs/blood sugar spikes and keep ending up "hungry" every few hours because they are not used to using fat for energy. If you're not making use of your fat reserves, of course you are going to get fatter as you keep storing fat but never using it.

I definitely agree that exercise is great though, if only just for the feeling healthier and more energetic in general. I just go for an hour's walk a few times a week, and do some pushups/crunches etc. every couple of days.

While we're at it, roads should only be available to those who can afford to build their own roads and share with others, and if you want the police to come and help you out, you should definitely have to pay them for their time. Can't have those poor people mooching off of everyone.

I think you'd do well to just install Windows inside a virtual machine, then you can just take a snapshot of the VM after you first install XP. A lot easier to revert to a non infected version of the VM.

You could have Virtualbox running in seamless mode so that they do all their browsing etc with Linux and only Rhapsody and iTunes need to be run using the VM.

iTunes is awful anyway, I've always used Amazon MP3 for my MP3 downloads since they were DRM free from the start, and just about any media player is better than iTunes IMO. When I was using OSX I used to use Songbird (still didn't do everything I wanted though). In Ubuntu I use Exaile ("just right" for me :) ).

My eyes have been opened though after seeing these libraries and watching a presentation by Douglas Crockford earlier today, so I'm actually quite looking forward to foraying into JavaScript again, as long as I only use "the good parts" and don't get too pissed off at any issues that still remain with the DOMs we have to work with :)

Unless we all standardise on one OS though, which probably will never happen, then web based or otherwise interpreted apps will continue to be very useful, so I've just kind of accepted it.

I can't wait to use some of this stuff in some of my projects here at work. I first tried to get into dynamic web pages when the whole lack of standards between IE and Netscape was making dynamic HTML stuff a complete mess. It mostly put me off from trying anything too fancy interface-wise again, beyond a few show/hide buttons, and a CSS based menu system that I use. It doesn't make much sense for everyone to have to write their own code to emulate standard interface elements, so it's great to see such a high quality library made available for everyone :)

I don't have problems with editing config files either, I work as a programmer, and I enjoy highly configurable systems. Ubuntu is still much more configurable than Windows or OSX.
