  1. Re:Bandwidth not so a plenty... on VDSL Demoed · · Score: 1

this is a silly subject to get excited about until someone comes out and says yes you to can have high bandwidth, and actually mean people who live in cities with under 1 million people.

I live outside Boston (a city of ~650,000) and have cable modem. And we even have DSL around here (though its astronomically priced).

But you're right. They need to start deploying these technologies outside the few major metros. Marketing types have this uncanny nack for thinking that New York & LA are the entire U.S., forgetting that the vast majority of the population lives in that big flat space in between :)

  2. Re:SCUD missiles @ Gulf on Anti-Ballistic Missile Weapons? · · Score: 1

Actually, in fact, not one SCUD was shot down by a Patriot missle. The simple fact is the SCUDs were built during World War II and litterally fell apart in the air.

You are incorrect on a few points here.

    1. The SCUD was not built during WWII. The SCUD is a Soviet weapon designed in the late 40's/early 50's that was based upon the design of the German A-4 ballistic rocket (the V-2).

    2. One of the reasons many of the Iraq scuds fell apart on their own was the poor engineering of the modified scuds. The Iraqi engineers tried to extend the range of the rocket by simply lengthening the fuel section of the rocket. This made them unstable causing many to break up spontaniously.

    3. Sure the Patriots record was not perfect. But remember it was not designed to be an anti-missile weapon! It was designed to replace the Hawk as the US Army's long-ranege anti-Aircraft SAM system. In light of that I think its record against SCUD's in the Gulf was quite good.

As it stands no country, that I am aware of, currently has the capability to "shoot down" a missle of anytype with any viable accuracy. The only defense to missle attack at this point is a missle whichdetonates in close proximity to the inbound missle showering it with shrapnel, thus disabling the inbound missle. But, this does not have an acceptable destruction ratio--far below the 80% accuracy mark.

What?? I'd like to see the weapon system that does have an 80+% reliability! Shooting down missiles is not exactly an exact sience. Getting a direct hit on a fling object (even an airplane) is EXTREMELY difficult. Proximity detonation is standard way of shooting down flying objects - this is the way most air-air and ground -air missiles work, it is much easier to get the missile close to the target than to actually hit it. Its not impossible, just impractical from an engineering/economic standpoint. And since proximity often does the job, its not worth it to waste money on systems that would guarantee direct hits.

Do I really need this? Well, AoE II really lags down at times on my 64MB P2-266. And I wont even go into the performance of 3d games like Descent3, Unreal Tourney, etc... So I'd say that I'd really like one! (or at least more ram, too bad its so f****** expensive!)

    Am I missing something here?

www.nsi.com/dotcomnowmail turns up a 404 for me. Same with www.networksolutions.com/dotcomnowmail. (nsi.com is just a redirector to networksolutions.com)I also looked at networksolutions.com and I cant see anthing on there about this program.

I have a domain registered with nsi (I registered when they were still at internic.net) and I have not recieved any spam from them about free web mail.

Whats the deal? Or did they fix this thing already?
