  1. I thought Navier-Stokes were unsolvable? on Mathematical Problems For The New Age · · Score: 1

Being a formal aerospace engineering grad, I thought that the Navier-Stokes equations were generally unsolvable unless gross approximations were made and powerful computers were used for to calculate the results to any given degree of accuracy. 3rd order, partial, non-linear differential equations are fairly tough nuts to crack!

  2. They should have GPL'ed it! on StarOffice Significantly Delayed · · Score: 0

So I guess this means that not many people are contributing code under Sun's crappy SCSL. Not surprising at all.

When is Sun going to wake up! There are thousands of coders ready to help them for nothing if they would just GPL the damn thing!

StarOffice is not going to challenge Office until it is truly open. Sun is fooling themselves if they think otherwise.

We're getting dangerously offtopic here, but ...

There's a difference between being "devoutly Christian" and associating with them. Your link provides no support for your original contention that Hitler and Nazi Germany were devoutly Christian. All I saw was an article that recounted pandering to Hitler by the Catholic church. Also, Christian does not necessarily equal Catholic.

Jesus said, "If you love me, you will keep my commandments." I can't think of a single one that Hitler kept, can you? Hardly makes him a devout Christian if you ask me.

Perhaps it was merely a bad choice of words on your part. If so, fine, but there are a lot of people who are ready to make the association you implied. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference.

OK, maybe you didn't want to start a flame war, but you're going to get one now. As a Christian, I take extreme offense at any comparison to Naziism. Please cite a source for this statement.

    Here's one from me: http://www.calweb.com/~kwdavids/hitler.html#expert s

In William Shirer's "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich", it is clear that Hitler planned to remove all vestiges of Christianity eventually, replacing all crosses with swasticas, and replacing all Bibles with copies of "Mein Kampf". Sorry, I don't have the book with me, so I can't cite the exact page, but it's probably referenced in the above URL.

Don't make sweeping generalizations if you can't back them up.

  6. PC Week Lab director is a liar! on Yet Another Crack-This-Box Challenge · · Score: 1

In this article, John Taschek implies that one of the recently cracked sites was running Linux. For those who are interested, there is a running debate about this article on Linux Today in which Mr. Taschek has been participating. The article is at

    http://linuxtoday.com/talkback/38904.html

In the discussion, I challenged him to defend his position about why he implied that Linux had been cracked. He responded by saying that Matt Drudge's main page (www.drudge.com) runs Linux. Of course, the page that was cracked was www.drudgereport.com which runs IIS on NT.

In short, John Taschek is a liar who has no credibility WRT Linux, and the purpose of this test, it is clear, is to either damage Linux's reputation or try to repair NT's.

Of course, I think we all knew that already!

  7. Re:redhat based on Mandrake 6.1 Is Out (For Real This Time) · · Score: 1

I agree with this. I've upgraded from Red Hat to Mandrake a couple of weeks ago, and my system seems much quicker (undoubtably due to the fact that Mandrake compiles their binaries for Pentium class machines, where Red Hat compiles them for 386).

As far as Red Hat being more of a marketing company, this may be true, but it serves a valuable purpose among the distributions. I believe that Red Hat will continue to focus more and more on appealing to larger companies moreso than any of the other distros, leaving the others to focus on providing more bang for the buck to individual users. Not that this is a bad thing. Each of the distros has a place depending on what is important to you. I just feel that larger companies will want to use what they view as being the most visible and widely supported of the distributions.

I upgraded to Mandrake from Red Hat 6.0 about a week ago, and it has performed splendidly for me thus far. I've noticed significant speed improvements in GNOME/E, and GNOME actually seems less buggy to me now (I don't know if that's accurate, since I believe Mandrake packages the same version og gnome-core and gnome-libs, but it certainly seems that way). I'm done with Red Hat. Mandrake gives me everything Red Hat does and more, and offers better performance. Who can argue with that?
