  1. Really? I saw this somewhere else... on HP Developing Hybrid Tablet PC / Coffee Table · · Score: 1

Actually, if we're going strictly for coffe table PCs, I believe that if you do a Google search for Yoshi and the Boxx, you'll find that he actually designed TWO PCs, both featuring fully functional PCs and multiple gaming platforms, that were designed to be used AS A COFFEE TABLE! Without the worry of a touch screen or additional CRAP on the top that could be ruined, you could actually use these AS COFFEE TABLES! (that, and they looked a helluva lot better than some of the pre-assembled CRAP out there... well, I think so anyway...) Wow, something that can be used as it was intended! I'm shocked!

I'm actually in the process of making my own Coffee Table PC, one which has all the features that HP tried to cram into it WITHOUT the worthless touch screen. Are we really that lazy that we can't even be bothered to hook up the TV to the PC in order to view pictures from our vacation to Nowheresville that Nobody wants to see? Come on, HP, give the nerd community a LITTLE credit! We were here before you, and we'll be here long after you're gone.

  2. Re:It will it hit the brown note. on World's Most Powerful Subwoofer · · Score: 1

Actually, I read this same article in some techie online mag, and I *believe* the magic number is 33Hz. The reporter rode around with the same person who composes the music used by Bass Mekanik at their decibel contests, and he had outfitted a van for that very purpose.

Interestingly enough, he also mentioned that it's not the low frequencies that do the damage to one's hearing, it's the high frequencies. Once the lower threshold of human hearing has been reached, there's not much more damage that can be done, but it's when the frequencies get so high they break glass that the real damage starts to happen. This explains the ability of club DJs to play the music so loud and suffer so little hearing damage, they're not exposing themselves to the higher frequencies.

  3. Re:Considering... on Identity Theft-What Can Really be Done w/o a SSN? · · Score: 1

well, i work at Target and one thing that we have to ask is if people want to apply for our credit card. if they do, they have to fill in their user information (name, addy, social, all that happy shit) and it's not really that well protected, if a person really wanted to they could just take the number right off the application. so it's not that hard to do

  4. Re:Lightbulb problem on Your Favorite Math/Logic Riddles? · · Score: 1

Well, one comment that has been posted said that a significant problem involves not knowing the original state of the light switches, i.e. they might all be on or all be off or some combination thereof. It is also stated that once you leave the room with the switches, you cannot re-enter it. However, I'm surprized nobody thought of this:

Open the door leading to the room with the lightbulbs, but DON'T GO IN. Observe the condition of the light bulbs. Make sure they are all off, THEN do the wait-and-see method. Since nothing was said about simply looking into the other room without actually entering it, this would be entirely possible.

One other idea would be to simply prop the door open, then start flicking switches and seeing what switch lights what bulb. This is, of course, assuming you have something that you could stick in the door to keep it open. Granted, many slashdotters will jump at me and say, "Yes, but it didnt say you had anything with you!" No, but it didn't say anything about NOT having anything, either...

  5. possible idea... on Building an Open Source "Clicker"? · · Score: 1

well, maybe instead of using wireless clickers, you could just build them into the students' chairs; this would work really well to prevent theft of such devices, and you wouldn't have to worry about range issues.

as you can probably tell, i'm not a huge fan of wireless. however if you went with a wired version that would eliminate many of the associated headaches.

  6. finally!!! on Mothers Taking the Fight to the RIAA · · Score: 1

Well, it's about damn time someone realized that us P2P file sharers are not the "hardened criminals" that the recording industry would like to believe. Look at the average downloader. Who is it? Sure not some felon on a prison computer. They're the typical college student going to Harvard or Stanford or Yale, who can't AFFORD to pad the pockets of the "big name artists" yet who still want to hear the music! It's annoying as hell to think that the RIAA is going to come after me, why? Simply because I dont feel like wasting 20 bucks of MY hard-earned money on a piece-of-shit album with 2 good songs and the rest shit on it. It's happened more times than I care to count. But does the RIAA care? No. All they care about is the damn profits. Well, I've got news for you! Your precious money-making "bands" won't be makin SQUAT without the money WE feel WILLING to pay to them. If you make a shit product you're not gonna have many takers. Enough on that rant. Nice to see someone finally standing up to these jackasses.

  7. damnit ma! another damn zit! on Oregon Is Growing A Mystery Bulge · · Score: 1

jeez... we get all worked up over a little swelling, which 90% of adolescents have experienced. it's called PUBERTY people! meanwhile, we've got crazy ol' Aunt Floe workin her magic down south and leavin us to deal with her mood swings. has anyone noticed just how crazy this country is?

there've been many many "sightings" of possible volcanoes for years... hell, they just a few years ago announced that Yellowstone was about ready to blow, but you don't hear anything more about that...hmm. wonder why?
