The teams I've been on have always handled stress by Quake/Unreal Tournament/etc. deathmatching. What's the appeal of brawling? Same thrill of victory, longer-lasting agony of defeat.

spoken like someone who has never won a fist fight.
the adrenaline rush you get from winning a video game brawl is about the same as taking aspirin compared to heroin.
sincerely, the thrill fo victory is much larger, and the agony of defeat teaches you to be much better before the next round.

the thing is, as universal as all computer type people think the microsoft evil empire is, it really isn't. there are still plenty of people who could care less about whatever strange things microsoft is doing to computers, and the people who run them. what it boils down to is that even though microsoft has a much higher cash value, sony has an obvious, and strong presence in just about every home in america. even the ones of people who don't kno how to boot up a computer.

  4. it's THEIR property for the love of..... on HBO Attacking BitTorrent · · Score: 1

i respect HBO for taking this approach to fighting the piracy of their property. go for them. yeahhh HBO cyber-weenies... granted, the folks over at sky-1, and sci-fi figured out how heavily pirated their battlestar galactica recreation was, and had the brainstorm to make it legitimately available (in limited quantity, and only certain episodes) on their website... it's amazing, instead of the major drop spike in viewers all of these piracy groups say dissemination of episodes over the internet would cause, they saw a massive upspike, as word of mouth, and trading eps caused people to want to watch their show... look, it's just one of many ways to embrace the new digital age of communication, and syndication... HBO has every right to be pissed off about people taking something they don't want to give away for free (remember, HBO doesn't have commercials, but you do have to pay for it to watch it at home in the first place, above and beyond most cable/satellite base plans) i wish HBO's answer indeed was to offer it to us on a free basis, but i can not argue their right not to... nor their right to take legal, and legitimate action to combat it. in fact, i applaud their method of combatting this threat to their bottom line in the manner they have chosen to. they are not taking it to the court room (it's already been hashed out there plenty, it's a matter of adding their name to a list of complaintents....) but rather to fight it head on, and realistically. they aren't trying to shut down the bit torrent source code, or program. but rather they are fighting the specific people trying to bootleg, or pirate their property. next to no money spent fighting it, and they feel better. excellent.

  5. make sure it will hold up in court on Owning Your Own IP at a Company? · · Score: 1

one of the big things here is you both agree that the code belongs to you, and that you will allow them to use it, even if you leave the company. you also agree that the data is the property of the company... so far, thats pretty vanilla. an important question on the licensing though, are you ok with them reverse engineering your source code? thats an important factor to include into the contract, as it can definitely limit what they can do with the code after you leave, and might also allow you to gain residual income from providing platform upgrades as time goes by, even after you've left said company. also, whether or not you will be allowed to pedal this code to another employer at another time. (even if you THINK you will never do this, it's good to know you can, ya never know whats around the corner) i definitely agree you should probably consult witha lawyer, you should be able to do this pretty cheaply... you probably won't want him to know you've gone to that extravagance though, as it might make him rethink, and take a much more conservative stance. i would suggest making sure you have the contract properly notarized though, to be certain it holds up in court.

  6. Re:artists helping pirates!? on Artist Suggesting Ways Around Copy Protection · · Score: 1

sincerely, artists don't make much off of albu sales once they reach the level of being on a sony contract. the real money they make is through the summer tour, and merchandising. and your right, if they wanted to allow their fans to do this, they should have made it a point to specify as such in their contract.

  7. artists helping pirates!? on Artist Suggesting Ways Around Copy Protection · · Score: 1

ok, lets be simple here. this artist has not helped a single pirate. pirates already know how to circumvent such copyright procedures. what he has done however, is left himself open to a major lawsuit, which will indeed set precedents for the future. he has indeed broken the law by advocating people to circumvent the copyright protection on SOMEONE ELSES intelectual property. the fact that this intelectual property is not his property, but that of sony has been brought up, and is absolutely correct. by signing the contracts, ad agreeing to them, and taking the money for the advance on the album, he signed away his rights other than any editorial provisions he made in said contract. the fact is, he doesn't have the legal right to tell people how to do this, or to suggest they do. i doubt sony will publicly sue him, but i do not forsee a happy jovial relationship with his label in the near future. not that sony has a great histlory of making artists happy... just ask michael jackson, or prince... but it stands that he has done it, and now it is time to watch the fireworks.
