  1. Shucks. on US Crypto Export Laws Ruled Unconsitutional · · Score: 1

I guess that means we can't be "International Arms Traffickers" anymore.

  2. Blah on Linux is a waste of time? · · Score: 1

Ladies and Gentlemen, set your flamethrowers to "scorch". This articles obviously just an attempt to goad everyone into flaming the guy like the open-source-brainwashed folks he tries to portray us as. The only semi-valid point this article makes is the "lack of software". While I agree you can go get a Windows program to do just about anything Joe User wants, saying they don't exist for Linux is just hogwash. Linux programs can't afford to throw $20 million behind marketing of something. Don't you just hate it when people spend time making a good product instead of pimping it to the public? This guy sure does..

  3. Ideas on AOL Considers Linux? · · Score: 3

This could really change the whole way people look at computers in their lives. "Hiding Linux from the user" is not as hard as this article makes it sound. Infact, I don't see what is hard about it all. Computer's in themselves "hide" things from users. Your average computer user doesn't know how the CPU works, what's on a motherboard, nor really cares. The average population just wants practicallity in a device. Writing a slick GUI on top of Linux does not sound real complicated at all.

I don't even see why Linux is "not an OS for consumer devices" either. Why not? Is there something glaringly obvious I should be aware of? Hmm let's see here - portability, reliability, performance, low cost. Stripped down to it's core functional enviornment it makes the IDEAL consumer device OS.

AOL could basically make "AOL Appliances". With the current pricing of electronic components, I'm sure you could package a cute little computer capable of running the GUI I mentioned above on bare-bones hardware. Linux has the potential to be a breakthrough in the way we use machines. Companies need to "think outside the box".

  4. "Former" M$ Aligned!?!?!? on Bochs Author Launches VMware Clone Project · · Score: 1

Well everyone seems to be sucking up to Microsoft now and days. I was unaware of this information, thanks for pointing it out. And why anyone would run Linux on NT is beyond me also

  5. possible really paranoid person? on Bochs Author Launches VMware Clone Project · · Score: 1

Forgive me if I miss the point of your post. How is Freemware protecting us from the big bad borg? A former Microsoft-aligned person starts a company, and we panic? This is redicluous over-reaction.

  6. Usefulness? on Bochs Author Launches VMware Clone Project · · Score: 1

While I truly appreciate anyone who writes Open source software to begin with, will this product actually be of any use? I believe it will probably take these guys a long long time to produce anything even half-way usable by anyone but code hackers. By the time Freemware probably rolls around in a stable state, it's technology will no longer be real "neat" or "awesome". Wine/DOSEmu will surely have progressed to the state where they can run everything most people would use Freemware to by that time. I'm not trying to say the product is a total waste, just something to think about. Time will tell.

  7. Box games on Q3Test in "a few weeks" · · Score: 1

Basically there's going to be boxed versions for every OS. It will be the same base level data. From what I've read you will be able to freely download any OS executable. The only differences in the boxes you buy will be which OS happens to be on that cd by default. Or maybe they'll just get a brain and put them all on the cd.

  8. I'm confused... on Gaming on Linux · · Score: 1

USB certainly isn't super-necessary for a good Game API, but it shouldn't totally be ignored. A good majority of game controllers, especially flight sticks and the like will probably be USB. Micro$oft's USB sound system/speaker hybrid is an interesting combination that may also catch on. I thought USB was "a flop" for a while. The problem with this though, is I'm just jaded. If Linux doesn't support it well, it must suck, right? No. USB has the potential to be an extremely cool technology if implemented correctly. Hopefully the Linux USB team will make some breakthroughs in the next few months.

  9. Potentially an even bigger problem than it seems on Lycos Mp3 Lawsuit? · · Score: 1

Very good points. This is sort of similar to the whole deal a while ago about software linking to third party sites for information on avalible tickets. If Lycos were to actually loose a case like this, it'd be rediculous. The whole Internet, in general would have to be made illegal. I mean geez, imagine the horror we could accidently stumble across a website, or a newsgroup, or a chat room and find the address to an mp3 site, oh no!

The record companies need to stop panicking and learn to embrace MP3 as a useful media. I'm not familiar with the history of such, but I'm sure such FUD was running rampant when Cassette Tapes came out. Or reel-to-reel for that matter. "You mean they can dub their vinyl onto Cassette's now, and share them with their friends?!". It's human nature that people will copy things, no matter what medium they are on. I hope MP3's will swing the whole financial situation of the music industry back in check. The big record companies
make boatloads of money and the artists usually end up making didly squat. MP3 and other electronic distribution format is feared because it takes away the power from the corporations and put's it into the hands of the artists, where it should be.

  13. Tracker music on Help save the Kosmic Free Music Foundation · · Score: 1

Comparing the substandard pop crap that plays on the radio today, tracking is by no means dead. The technology is obsolete, but so is that computer you just bought yesterday.

A majority of original music I've heard is tracked. It gives a good place for people to experiment with sound. Mind you, if you base your opinion of any of Kosmic's latest songs (no offense here, but they aren't the greatest) you will come away with a fairly bad opinion of tracking. It takes some effort to find the classics, but they are there.

To criticize and mock the people tracking tunes is absurd. It's a wonderful art, and should be respected.
