I know. I'm one of the Deaf in question. And I'd like to point out how much smarter I am by just knowing the difference. AND I don't care if it *is* a reference to Pinball Wizard.
SCO (Santa Cruz Organization)... is owned by Microsoft... in some way, or were, at one point. I'm not really sure since Im a Linux zealot, not a UNIX expert.
*If* this is true, this is supposed to be representative of a responsible and respected company? And why only one thin report on something so serious? IF this is true, I still don't understand how Microsoft thinks they have any business releasing software with Internet functionality anymore. Intranet, sure. Internet? No way.
This is something that I am so interested in its not even funny. X is good for sharing / pumping apps up and down a network / remote login etc. but is too much cruft for something as simple as a desktop GUI. The topic de rigeur is targeting Linux as a replacement for Windows (which I think is moronic: Linux is *really* a server but everyone will disagree and follow the trend and call me an asshole anyway. oh well!). Well, not in its present state. I mean, if Caldera's WebSpyder browser can run in DOS mode, there's no reason why Linux can't have a better GUI system that doesnt require so much twisted legacy-based logic and overhead.
I just installed SuSE after using RH nearly exclusively for the last two years, and I must say I was extremely impressed. Configuration files were where they should be, the/opt directory was home to KDE and Netscape (like it should be). Netscape actually works in the presence of Java (which hasnt in RH since the migration from libc5). Yes I know that SuSE is rpm based, and at one time was based on RH but they've gone their own path. However, I don't think I'm going back to Red Hat. Long live Geeko.
If you coneheads had bothered to release a binary for linux users to use so they could watch DVD's under the same pretense as a Windows user, we would not be having this problem. Recognize your hang ups for what they are: short-sightedness
I can see I've gotten some people interested in this idea. I'd would like to speak with more like minded individuals. I've often thought of doing something like this for my own interest. I think it would be a kick. Feel free to email me truefluke@yahoo.com to discuss this further.
Come to think of it, I will expand on that. Linux, G_ds know I love it, but I would also love to see these things happens to a splinter effort from FreeDOS 1) Make it a true 32 bit OS 2) Forget about back-asswards compat. issues. Break somewhat newer ground by borrowing some great linux ideas such as a modular kernel ingrained tcp/ip stack, virtual terminals, etc. DOS could definitely be given a new life 3) Its hard for some newbies who are used to DOS to wrap their minds around such issues as inted.conf and networking things. They don't always need this stuff. This could be a DOS equivalent to Linux for the "single user". 4) Admittedly, "C:\(path)" is much easier to use in some cases. 5). Tons and tons of programmers who cut their teeth in programming on DOS with Borland C, etc. This would be a great resouce. 6). Implement the GNU gcc, libs, graphic libs, etc. These things could be retooled for a single user multi-tasking OS. 7). Sure the FAT filesystem needs to be rewritten, but someone already made FIPS able to understand and work with FAT32. 8). There is no reason why it cannot be given a more flexible CLI. My point is, all the pieces are there, they just need to be implemented. Just my lousy two cents, er which now makes four cents. Do I get moderated down for overspending?;)
Actually I always thought FreeDOS becoming 32 bit with multitasking ability and GPL'd software would be a great solution for the newbie who cannot quite wrap their minds around sys admin duties.
Typically, no matter how much something annoys me about an article, I find If I am going to post something, I usually leave it for the moment, do something completely unrelated, then go back and try to construct a coherent, responsible post (myabe I spent too much time being 'corrected' when I was younger;).
I try to do this in R/L (real life) too, as well as V/L (virtual life). If something upsets me, I grab my coat and go for a nice walk. I have found this has helped me greatly being of Irish temperment and "Deaf" (grounds for being misunderstood / misinterpreted in the first place).
I find that as I am getting older, I have less to say. The thought process is still there, gears turning and the like, just ask my wife about me being unable to sleep at all sometimes when working something over in me head.
Sorry if this is off-topic, I just thought I'd share a rare reflection from the "real world".
Im sorry, you missed my inference. I have used applications (such as games) thru SVGA lib etc. running out of console mode, and I did state that I believed that the graphics were fine. This shows an ability to bypass X altogether and create a new GUI through that, or OpenGL. I know what an API is, ok? I'm sorry that you did not take the time to *infer* what I wrote and chose to read what you wanted to, hence, that is a fine line, between what I posted and what you read. All in all, Peace, still, even to you.
I remember back when I was in University studying, the philisophy course I had had a slightly biased bent. The focus was on Socrates and how he was the founding father of free thought. I didn't think that this was anywhere near the truth since he believed that in order to have a strong army to defend your state you must (to paraphrase) "only promote good things about our literature, our G_ds," etc. so that the army would believe that the state's cause was good and just and worth dying for. That's not free thought, that is censorship. How does this relate to the topic at hand? Internet censorship will always be relative, because it works under the premise of what the masses believe is good and just. Reno, I am certain, believes she is doing "The Right Thing" but this issue will always be thorny, because what I consider "right and just" is NOT neccesarily YOUR point of view. Therefore any mandate when it does come out will probably please many and anger many others. One good thing the entire Internet framework is for, is a forum. An open slate to place your views. Socrates may very well be smiling right now:)
Windows and MS are bloated? OK, but look at GNOME and KDE. They aren't featherweights either. They are BLATANT attempts at giving some Win95 functionality to the Linux / UNIX OS. IE? IE Doesn't crash on me like Nutscrape does. Netscape is *barely* tolerable running in Windows. In Linux, it is even worse. Don't shift the blame on MS if a competitor's programmme crashes on the OS. Windows has lots of problems, but with a little diligence and maintenace, Win98Se runs just fine for me. Pay attention to apps you install, don't buy or use weak freeware crap, back up your C:\Windows\System folder (the DLL home) before you install anything major. C'mon people. It simple. Linux has its problems, too. For example: I realise that glibc2 was "a much needed update" but so far, its sucks! I've seen more errors in Linux now than in the days of libc5! KDE=Qt? There's some bloat for you. gtk+ has a lot of potential but requires a machine with a lot power before it works well. X? Don't even get me started. I've spent as much time if not more within Linux than Windows and they BOTH HAVE THEIR PROBLEMS! There IS NO PERFECT OS! So stop slinging around this tired rhetoric. ~just a lowly user who *knows* what choice is and exercises it.
I'd rather be stuck with MS

Seriously, I havent seen one thing from AOL / Netscape that works well. Oh, ok AOL Messenger. Geez. Gimme a break. This is going to get better in the future? Sorry, folks, I'd rather side with Microsoft on this one. At least their spin doctors don't dictate what I can and cannot see. This AOL/Warner thing just plain gives me the creeps.
Neither. According to an interview in Yahoo!:Internet Life (April 1999) He uses an iMac. Its his son Zowie (Joey) who's the techhead, and according to Bowie, "He's so totally fluent [his son]... He's done a lot of programming when he was taking a break from university, programmed for BowieNet. He's quite a techhead, I'm not". At the very end of the interview he says he is "a Mac person". I wont hold that against him, because he does more all day than I do in a month, so... *shrug*
I agree. X is too archaic. There should be other options such as rewriting and extending SVGAlib or maybe using OpenGL or such for GUI based things and video. Ive played some games using SVGAlib and the graphics are just fine. Personally, I love linux. I hate X Windows. BTW this isn't flame bait because I am actaully an open source advocate--- The OS : sure, open source. Applcations : No, they don't all have to be Open. Streaming Video? : also doesnt have to be as far as Im concerned. See, I have a simple rule. Use the best tool for the job. *shrug*. I'm probably not going to check up on the responses to this post because Ill probably be called a "troll" (which makes no sense btw. The spelling you want is "trawling" i.e. for a "bite"). Im not trawling. I'm sick of all the fighting and OS Bashing. I've seen more fights, arguments, insults within the open source community and on #linux channels than anywhere else on the 'net. Linux is great. So are other software products that happen to be written and released by corporations. Maybe I would have been happier living under a BSD license. I dont know. But nothing has been said to me in the past to change my mind about trying Linux, and there is nothing that could be said to me now about not using software which is released for a profit. If its open source, cool. If it isn't, I'll buy it. If its crap, Ill call it crap, doesnt matter to me if is open, or commerical, or not. Crap is crap. (Of course, I realise that "crap" is relative to the person). Use the things you like, and get on with your life. If you cannot get something under the open source banner, don't label it a bad, evil thing just because its so. Peace
I have been waiting so long because the Netscape 4x series sucked so bad. I dont care about paying for an application that will work well (I don't have the qt toolkit installed, either). Please please please let this thing work well. I know its just beta right now, but...:)

Woops my bad if i was wrong. If so, then im even happier. I like Slack too.
