Obviously optimum is going to be watching p2p more than some other protocols but when it comes to the capping its all automated so the protocol shouldn't matter. I have spoken to web developers that have been capped when uploading to there servers and I have spoken to gamers who tried setting up their own game servers for them and a couple friends which have been capped.
The thing that is really annoying about the cap though is that it doesn't seem like anybody knows exactly what triggers it which makes it harder to avoid. I've managed to avoid it by limiting my uploads which I really shouldn't have to do.
I have optimum online too and the great thing about newsgroups is that your not sharing the files out to other people. You see optimum doesn't cap you for downloading they cap you when your uploading to much. I don't know how speeds are in your area but downloading from newsgroups I can pull about 13-14Mbs and I can do this all day and night and optimum could care less. What optimum does care about is the uploading and thats when they notice you.
Her only problem was that the dhcp client wasn't being run on boot so I just simply had her run "dhcpcd eth0" and she was online. I didn't bother updating the runlevel to start it up everytime because had someone been listening in on the call at this point I could still claim that I hadn't made any permanent changes to the os.
Apparently her son was usually able to help her using an ssh connection but since she didn't have internet at all and he lives far away he didn't have the patience to troubleshoot with her over the phone. I told her to leave the comp on so that the internet connection remains active and he could then login and finish up the job.
I totally understand what your saying about once linux is running it stays running and once windows is running anything can happen but I wouldn't install linux on anyones computers because then everytime they have a problem there gonna call me and I deal with that at work everyday.
BTW we don't support any routers. We'll reset it with you on the phone but if it doesn't pick up an IP address we're reffering you to the manufacturer.
I work for an ISP tech support and I actually had a Gentoo user call in one time because she had no idea why she couldn't get online. My job doesn't actually allow me to troubleshoot Linux but this customer was upset because she didn't know anything about linux, so I helped her get back online. Turned out it was a Gentoo users mom who didn't want linux but her son insisted on it because he hates microsoft. This makes me wonder how many of these people calling into their tech support are gonna Linux fan boys mothers.
