I agree... However, how hard is it to post an unmodified interview along with the obviously *majorly* modified interview. I mean, after all, we're talking a web page here. They can cut & paste 90% of it. (unless they cut a LOT of material!)

I don't think that's very fair to any of the /. maintainers OR Andover. I have been reading Slashdot for a long time, and I have noticed nothing but improvements overall. I don't think it's been long enough to really know for sure how the Andover buyout will affect Slashdot, but it sure seems to be getting off to a good start.

Heaven forbid that the /. maintainers should do something other than post stories for YOUR amusement every once in a while...

Keep up the good work, guys. Here's to hoping Andover makes a good steward for Slashdot/Freshmeat/whoever else.

I thought it was a good interview (more actual content than any other I've seen, I think), but I was a little perturbed at all the [editorial] modifications. Not to say that they didn't do a good job, but seeing [all of] those insertions/changes just makes me wonder what he *really* said. ;-)

Not that I think there is any deception, just that I want to KNOW what slang Linus used.

All in all, kudos to Upside, though.

The guy wrote a clone of Unix (which I'm surprised he didn't get sued for doing) with great organization and happened to release it freely so other Unix lovers could use it also. This meant hacking your own drivers for the hardware but in time people cover those faster then you can so you just use theirs.

Not to be pedantic, he did not get sued because Linux is a cleanroom implementation of the POSIX standard, not a recreation of any particular Unix system.

Reverse engineering is legal if you don't have access to the source...

BTW, your point was well taken. I don't mean to shift the topic of your argument. :-) Linus is NOT a god; however, he is someone that many of us (myself included) respect and admire for his achievements.

How difficult would it be to use these drivers as reference for creating a RIVA TNT kernel framebuffer driver? Will this make that a lot easier?

I, for one, like the idea of a unified framebuffer interface across platforms; I would *love* to see some more explicit HW support.

Firstly, MS Office is not a standard, standards are properly documented open formats that are usualy (but not always) well thought out, sensible and portable. HTML, XML, ASCII text, TeX, Ansi C, HTTP and XPM are all "standards", a crappy, proprietary, backwards and forwards incompatible, binary document format is not a standard.

It's not looking pretty... I asked about spec releases, and he got back on the driver topic pretty quick. I dunno if that's because he thought I was more concerned about drivers or because specs just aren't going to happen.
