The problem is what could be vs what is.

Cloud computing would be great in theory if all PCs in the world could be setup so you simply login anywhere anytime and there is your personal desktop, files, apps, etc.

The problem being, our economical growth of the internet. The why today's internet is designed stops this from being a reality for at least another 10 years.

Large companies, Google, Microsoft, etc all adopt the reality that one day it can be a possible but unless we are all running super fast (IP6 of course) networks it is just a mere pipe dream.

As for data and the localization of data, I tend to agree with you on this but I also see the counter to this argument. The General Population hates internet security, virus' etc and the Cloud concept could solve a lot of today's traditional security problems, yet simply open up the avenue of new concepts as it goes (Google and China's fiasco last week is an example of this). Its not we need to merely securify our PC's but now companies are left wondering ... "is my website secure as well??"

Security brands will change their product to cater too it but for now its a great selling point. As people purchase Macs because of the security reputation behind them, people will chose Cloud for the same reason, PCI is a part of this marketing powerhouse that out for this at the moment and its more akin to paying protection money to the Mafia then it is an actual security methodology (I have my own rants for that for another time).

For today, measured Cloud computing works, NetSuite is a perfect example of this and a company which has no fear of failing tomorrow. I think Microsoft's abuse of the word "Cloud" computing is exactly whats wrong with Cloud today. The term is being used to sell everything they do. "Cloud this and cloud that". In reality its exactly what you say a "new words for old things".

Yes and No (re desktop). The corporate world is really buzzing with the word cloud. Almost every big brand has something out there and are continuing to develop rapidly to keep it going.

People want cheap, then they get upset that the Manufacturer finds a cheaper method of production? too bad because the Manufacturer knows that even though there are draw backs ... Cheaper always wins the fight in the eyes of the masses.

Its too soon for Cloud, but its hardly a failure.

I dont think its a shot in the foot but i understand the limits in innovation.

The good thing about the iPhone which i see is that you can't get a virus as opposed to an open development platform.

This will be the thing that Apple always prides themselves, that is their customers never really have to worry about anti-virus.

Opening dev, is opening a can of worms which Apple doesn't want. Google will do it not caring about this, and it took no more than a few days after its official release to have a virus out in the wild.

I really dont want to have to purchase Norton AV for my mobile ... that would just suck.

Google maybe a good search tool but they are not a serious IT brand the Chinese Hacker incident is perfect example of this and why Google cloud services cant be a replacement over Office just yet (maybe one day but not today).

Security, Google dunces out on, Marketing, Google suffers, creating apps that work for business Google still has a long way to go. Sorry if I'm being a bit one eyed on my last point, i purchased Google Docs the other day and was less than impressed.

For me, unless Google employs Darth Vader as CEO and takes on board all these factors then Apple and MS will eat Google for breakfast and it goes without saying that it wont massively affect Google anyway (they wont go broke if this doesn't go through, just lost a stack of money).

Now Apple and MS survive on their iPhone sales and OS sales, if Google is showing that they are trying to take that away from them the battle will get thick. My money is on the fact that Google tries it, gets a bit of head way but inevitably fails, forgets all about it, goes back to buying more unprofitable companies and slapping their adwords into them and the world keeps spinning.

Apple and Microsoft will align in order to make this happen, time passes, other things happen and then Microsoft stabs Apple in the back (Microsoft is good at attacking at moments of weakness) and Apple will partner with Yahoo (or another brand, until they make their own one) and we can all go back to hating Microsoft again.

    I actually do.

An IT manager doesn't need to be able to program but he does need to understand proper coding practices.

If not he cant see whats behind programming and the nature behind maintaining a strong and well groomed source base then he truly doesn't understand what he's managing.

How can an IT manager determine if the new person they are hiring can actually program up to the particular standard the company needs?

The manager could of just fired the best programmer and kept all the spaghettio's simply because the spegettio programmers get the job done quicker. (I see this happen more then i'd like to admit)

You don't need to know the language, and "hello world" isn't going to help them, but if an IT manager who cant fathom the "processes" i.e the application design and whats involved then he shouldn't be there.

I agree with the "vibe" of the article but i don't agree with the explanation. There are far too many IT managers out there with no idea, plenty of them will go and hire a bunch of indans to replace a dev team, and literally destroy the companies well kept code base simply to make him look good at the end of the day in the eyes of his directors, in the short term he fixes problem and moves on but the trail of destruction he leaves behind him is someone else's program.
