What I find interesting is that your ID is exactly 10,000 less than the GP. I know, it's silly. The first thing I thought was that you replied to your own post. I looked at the number before the name. (not a habit mind you...)
wants to see his name on the front page of Slashdot
You're just jealous... poo-poo head.
You have to wonder though: Why would data transfer (of publicly available and non-copyright data) be illegal? Was he using this to perform some kind of DoS attack (polling for a transfer over and over)? If so, why doesn't the DNS server detect and restrict this? If this is a concern over the private data, why wouldn't the DNS only transfer public records (and is this possible)? Maybe he is guilty for the intent of his actions, but it should be a learning experience for anyone working with the DNS servers and/or code to restrict this in the future.
Actually, I think the issue is that MS doesn't release the specs to underlying OS APIs so that competitive browsers and office applications can function at the level of IE/Office. I think it's more of a fight to allow the user to totally replace IE with Opera/FF/Konquerer, file browser and all.
MS is a for-profit company. It is not their job to serve you, provide you with public service...
I thought that was the point of business... I guess I have to re-evaluate my view on what running a business is. I mean, if the people don't matter, why would you need the people your providing a service to? Just kill a man and steal his money. Hell, we can start by exterminating everyone on the planet. Then you'd have the most successful business in the world. Total monopoly, no competition, no taxes, no salaries to pay and total domination!
honestly, don't you think if this story was based on some small start-up trying out what would be called new cutting edge technology, the tones would be different?
Actually, I think it might be worse.
Sure, sometimes I forget the paper at home, but I don't live that far away from the store. I usually pass it on the way home from work and I'll stop in the next day if I have to. I guess it could be different if you lived far from town, but I'd expect that after a certain amount of time you'd train yourself to do certain techniques to remember. If I want to take something with me in the morning, I'll usually set it on my wallet. That's something I never forget.
just a cranky morning on my part
I hear ya. What I get tired of is all the complacency though. Very few people that I know that have studied or even remotely thought about it think that Microsoft needs to be trimmed, cut back, split apart or controlled (less favorable of the options) in some way. Those that don't usually cite "business is business" or some tripe about how Microsoft saved the technology world. (To me it would be like saying McDonald's made nutritional eating popular.) That or they spout some garbage about one man, who happened to legally swindle the company to where it is now, giving away billions of dollars to countries to try to bring his reputation out of the stump. (Scrooge rings a bell, except this Scrooge is helping people in another town instead of the town he took the money from while keeping the town he's in footing the bill.) Ugh, the crank is set in now.
seriously, why does it seems that if someone BESIDES Microsoft had proposed this idea, people would be all for it?
You mean like Google ads? Yeah, those get all kinds of props (actually, because they are pretty non-invasive, I don't mind them) or all Billboards you see along the highway. Those have had a great track record for love. Advertisements in general are frowned upon. Especially for subscription services, but Microsoft seems to be doing that as well with XBL.
You've heard of Godwin's Law. I'm going to create another law that states "When someone pulls out the 'If it were another company' card, they automatically lose."
Or are does everyone here have perfect memory?
Pen and paper Mr. redwagon. Pen and paper.
experienced going to your local grocer AFTER they reorganized the store?
Yes, they moved a few isles around, but it wasn't anything my primitive brain couldn't handle. I just get a bit more exercise, maybe walk down a wrong isle, another 2-3 minutes in the store... that's all. I learn and adapt. It's not really that hard. What does this have to do with cart advertisements?
Excuse me dave562,
The Federal Internet Bureau of Usage Standards (FIBUS) has determined that you have exceeded your alloted browsing time for today. You should step back from your PC and check in to the local authorities or we will send the Internet Monitoring Service to come and deactivate your line. Thank you for your cooperation.

P.S. I agree with you and Ron Paul, but I thought that fit in with the whole idea of where the nanny government is going: Us taxpayers being ripped a new one so some lazy ass family can ignore their kids/themselves on the net and not accidentally run across something they might not want to see. I truly want him (RP) to have a chance of doing what is needed.
That's what's a bit perverse about a lot of restaurant meals--not only will they make you feel fat, they'll put you in a lazy mood so you are less motivated to be active. When those effects wear off you'll feel tired and grumpy, then you'll want to eat more bad food to get that mild euphoria again.
So that's why I've been reading Slashdot more often after lunch... I don't feel like doing actual work.
You just need to apply more "threads", that's all. Tie it up so much, that you cannot "process" the "job" and if you do, it will take so long to get out of the many "threads" that you'll have time to take care of it when you reach the "join."
(I know, that was a little vague, obscure, and reaching. Maybe someone will get a chuckle out of it...)
Personally, I've always wondered if High Fructose Corn Syrup was actually better for us then Sugar. (I'm sure it was mainly about money as stated in the article.) Both my parents are diabetic (my dad is mild, mother is severe, and I think I'm very mild) I usually tend to steer clear of corn as much as I can, though I don't evaluate food labels and such so I know I consume it. I don't eat raw corn because I don't like the flavor and I avoid popcorn as I usually don't like the flavor of that either (with or without butter.) Consider me interested in the theory though. They always say: "Too much of anything is bad for you."
I know this may sound little "preachy"(?) but wouldn't that be one of the biggest benefits to open standards? People reviewing the standards, and fixing possible bugs or "workarounds" the original standard missed.
I just wish we could get that into the heads of the big software shops... you know who you are. It's unfortunate that money turns against a good idea.

Unless you can get IBM to kick out some cheap PowerPC PCs that you could sell with Linux. As we all know, XP/Vista won't install/run on anything but x86. Maybe if DEC/Alpha was still around and Windows still created HALs for these (I'm pretty sure they abandoned that support tree a while back).
Either way, it would require some low end, non-x86 CPUs and maybe that's an oxymoron in itself.
I'm waiting for the mosquito control bill to pass Congress. We need to get these lethal mosquitoes out of the hands of our young Dinolings. There can be no middle ground on this! The two week waiting period for mosquitoes is simply not enough!
I guess it depends. You could always argue that An alien race was found and they were technologically advance or already found a cure for many of the diseases and were willing to share. Or they were a warlike race bent to destroy Earth cause we spied on them... Either way, you might not have to worry about cancers and disorders anymore.
A hit is a hit. Doesn't matter is a bot hits it or not. You'd have yourself an automated hit generator just by posting a few thousand links on Slashdot comments.
As I mentioned in another comment above, you can use a multitude of applications to develop Flex/AS3. I happen to use FlashDevelop, a free, open IDE focused on Actionscript2/3 development.
I pretty much develop everything I do in Actionscript2/3 in FlashDevelop on my Windows machine using the Flex SDK. I didn't have to pay a thing for either. I can't edit the time line and draw pretty pictures in it, but I can create the "stage" objects, embed images (in AS3/Flex), and draw them with code (gradients and all if I want.)
You really only need Flash if your more of a designer than a coder.
I think it has more to do with the opinions of the owner of the media. They wield some awful power by censoring what they don't want people to see and showing them what they think will sway popular opinion in their favor. There are some local radio stations that refuse to play music (Lacuna Coil - Heaven's a Lie) that they said was anti-religious, but Flyleaf (an all Christian rock band with multiple songs about faith ["All Around Me", "I'm So Sick"]) is played on a daily (almost hourly) basis. I'm surprised the movie "The Compass" actually made it to the theaters. The religious groups were all over that like flypaper because of the ideology/theology of the original book's author.

Did you see the findings?

You'd have a hard time convincing me that Coke or Pepsi alone owns ~95% of the world's vending machines and the other owns around 3%.

Wouldn't that be:
Step 0: Make a really hot cup of tea, to help you calculate how utterly improbable becoming President is today.

Let me summarize the wall of text ;)
Use the right tool, for the right job.

No no... it's safe... you can trust anyone posting an executable under AC. Why would they want to do anything to hurt you?

So what your saying is using .NET is like being caught in a net and using Mono is like having "Mono"?
