    Uh, no. USB 1.0 was introduced in 1994. The firewire spec was finished in 1995. The reason USB won is because it's cheaper to implement: no royalties and less chips. BTW, IBM helped develop USB and Firewire.

    Depends on the application that uses said floating point operations. According to the Spec benchmarks, Povray (a renderer I use frequently) performs much better on Core2 and Athlon64 chips than Itanium. And then there's the cost efficiency: for the price of an Itanium system, I can get four or more multicore Core2/Athlon64-based computers and render images in parallel.

    Whether the Mac is a parallel product or an evolved product, the point is that the idea of user friendly computer with a WYSIWYG, mouse based GUI was not a failure. This was an early unsuccessful attempt, but in the long run the problems and costs were sorted out.
    You are working on a machine right now, no matter what the brand of OS, that took those basic ideas and made something successful out of them.

    What kind of phone do you have? I have had 2 Sony Ericcson phones (my current phone and the immediate prior phone) in which I could transfer files via bluetooth to my computer, even using a Linux OS. BTW, these are essentially free phones with AT&T as my carrier.

    They're actually taking a page from Apple. How? Remember how people keep saying that Mac OS X 10.2 is faster than 10.2, and 10.3 is faster than 10.2, and 10.4 is faster than 10.3? Well, MS just made Vista slow intentionally so that Windows 7 will seem faster, because it really is!*

    *for those who lack a sense of humor, that was a joke by the way.

    Some doctors and all pharmaceutical companies and hospitals do not want to cure you with a blue pill. Their whole existence in life is to maximize their profits, to do otherwise is not in the interest of their share holders.

    As a physician, let me ask: What are you talking about? What are these diseases that you speak of that can be easily cured with a pill that the pharmaceutical companies don't want to make?

    Heart disease is the most common cause of death in this country. Why? Usually, it's because of lifestyle issues: no exercise, eating poorly, smoking, etc.

    The most common cancer that kills people? Lung cancer. Want to decrease the risk of lung cancer? Stop smoking.

    Uhm, IBM has boatloads of CPU options (POWER, PowerPC, x86, Itanium) and they've been doing pretty well.

    Despite MS sales dropping 6% and profits dropping ~30%, they're still somehow the 3rd most profitable company in the world according to Fortune. They're ahead of even GE! So who's ahead of them? Exxon and Chevron.

    Did you even read my prior post? If you had, you would have noticed the complications I mentioned are a result of actually being pregnant rather than the act of childbirth.

    As for your rant, why didn't you have your child at home then?

    Also,

    The civilized alternative would have been real childbirth -- I and my brothers were all delivered breech. Yes, it takes longer than non-breech labor, but it would certainly have been less than three days.

    The problem with breech is that if the baby's head is too big for the pelvis, then there's a real problem with getting the baby out. You have the rest of the body out, but not the head.

    Seriously? do we really want to go down this route? We've already screwed with the planet and life enough. Do we really need to screw with it more and more by allowing human/animal hybrids?

    We already have them. They're called "transgenic mice" and we use them for research. We also have bacteria with human genes too. They make insulin for diabetic people, etc.

    Whoah, finally somebody who is actually against motherhood and/or apple pie. Never thought I'd see the day.

    If you don't think the complications I've mentioned warrant any intervention then there's really no point in discussing this. When epidural anesthesia was introduced, there were outcries by religious people that this was unnatural, that the pain of birth must be experienced as a human condition. Seriously, why do we listen to these types of crackpot ramblings? Because they speak the loudest?

    This has got to be one of the stupidest thing I've ever read. The one thing that would quickly decrease the risks of pregnancy to absolutely zero is an artificial womb! Pregnancy itself has a host of potential complications that range from mildly irritating to quite deadly (eg. abdominal stria, pregnancy induced diabetes, pre-ecclampsia, ecclampsia, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary thromboemboli, amniotic fluid emboli, ectopic pregnancy, choriocarcinoma, etc.).

    Hopefully this piece of legislation gets voted down.

    You could say the same about almost any energy capture technology we have right now. Dams destroy river ecosystems. Solar panel production requires nasty chemicals, and their disposal is even worse. Wind farms kill birds. The list could go on.

    Vanish -> Doom was better because you get XP and items after the battle. With X-Zone, no items are dropped and no XP. This was especially helpful when killing dinosaurs on dinosaur island to level up.
