They need oversight, to stop them from harming or stealing from people. People, and other governments, also need this. That is where government comes in, and that is the only place it should be. When it extends beyond that, it becomes far worse than any corporation.
That said, I do not necessarily think corporations would often use force against each other if there were no laws. It is not good for business, as it causes mutual detriment, and is a win-lose proposition. They might use force on people, but then again, that might kill potential customers.
I want people to be able to choose from the Hilton moon base, or the Marriot Mars base. Maybe a Holiday inn on one of Mars's moons. For a longer trip, perhaps a resort on Titan or Ganymede. One nice thing about corporations is that they rarely bomb each other.
similar research in this country is largely the burden of private organizations
Which almost always do a better job than government. The reason that they have never sent people to the moon is very much related to your point: it isn't worth it. They are trying to make real gains, not do something "cool" to earn voter support, but do something useful to earn money. How much more have the Europeans invented than the US?
All the tangible benefits we've reaped from space travel (tang, velcro, etc)
Tang and velcro were not created by the space program, and tang is not a tangible benefit. If you want to give examples, give real ones. That's not to say there haven't been any benefits, but most of them have been military.
Package management and dependencies used to be a problem for me, then I learned of debian, games used to be a problem for me and then I learned of winex(cedega), I had a problem with MS office and then I found crossover, I had a problem with outlook and then I found evolution, I had a problem with single sign on and windows transparency over server message block then I found winbind... There are frustrated users, and then there are self educating *nix users.
So, whenever you want to do something, you have a problem, and you have to spend time to fix it. What if I just want to be able to do something, and not have to deal with "configuration" or "installing packages" or " educate myself about my OS"? Can Linux do that?
You aren't supposed to be able to say anything and not be affected. You are supposed to be able to say anything. The government can't arrest you for saying something, but you are still accountable for what you say.
It is in no way an infringement of rights if an employer fires someone for saying something they don't agree with. Unfortunately, in this case the employer was the government, which brings up all sorts of political issues.
That's not really true. Joe Average wants WIndows because that's what he thinks a computer is. A box and a screen with the windows and the internet inside. He doesn't care about hardware support or software support.
It is Google being "cool" that got them where they are today. Ask most people who use Google, and they don't have a real reason for it. I just like the page layout.
$4k/year? Where did you get that figure? Tesla says the batteries only have to be replaced every 100,000 miles. Do you drive that much in one year? It's really about $4k for the lifetime of the car.
I am the representative for the A500LBG (association of 500 pound gorillas), and plan on pressing charges for libel if you do not immediately rescind your claim. To suggest that 500 pound gorillas would ever associate with the RIAA is unfounded defamation.
Obesity is not cause by sugar, refined sugar, carbs, fats, proteins, trans fats, saturated fats, aliens, terrorists, the secret society that controls the world, or the vast right/left wing conspiracy. It is caused by eating too much and exercising too little. The "Ooh, let's ban x ingredient" attitude is both unfounded and irresponsible.
Healthy food would always be profitable if people cared enough.
Interestingly, if people took responsibility and didn't buy unhealthy food, general health and availability of good foods would increase greatly.
Ignorance and irresponsibility are poison, but they get votes for politicians.

Why would other civilizations be angry about our no bid contracts? They're costing us, not them.

So it is the Republicans' fault that Apple's stock went down a little?
Hello, I am an agent of the GNU secret police,
We've heard of your dissidence against our move to make wikipedia the entire internet,
You're going to have to come with me.
Well, sure, vim is your text editor, but that doesn't mean you can't use emacs as your OS. It's missing a good text editor anyway.
How do you know the Diebold machines were corrupt? Can you back that up?
700,000? Out of 300 million? I think they can safely ignore that.

In a pure democracy, the government can do whatever it wants, the government being the majority.
"Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote."

I think everyone else is way ahead of you.
Is there another operating system for the Linux kernel?

You plan on selling 7000 bare batteries?
1. No one can use them as they are, and very few would be comfortable hacking together a battery for their laptop.
2. Of the very few people who could use one, how many need to get a new battery for their laptop, and are willing to risk it exploding for ~$40?
3. Of those people, who will end up buying it and finding it?
Investment = $80,000 + taxes
Proceeds = $60
Revenue = Proceeds - ebay fees - paypal fees - lawsuit when "laptop battery" hurts someone - interest on loan
Net Profit ~ -$100,000
"And THAT'S being conservative"
You might want to rethink your business plan.

Is sponge #234 in the disposal?
Check!
Is #235?
Uh, I can't see it.
OH NO! (Cue moving red light and siren noises)
Oh, wait, it is under towel number 137.
Phew. Okay, let's see, we were on #258?
Uh huh. Check.
