Between this and the initiative to loosen the rules on media ownership, it's clear that he's got a soft spot in his heart (wallet?) for monopolies and oligopolies. And golly, he's a Republican! Who'da thunk?

The most important threat to the survival of free software is the concept of "trusted computing," which really means the building of hardware you as a user can't trust at all

Well said - this is a perfect example of Doublespeak, for which you could also say that the built-in presumption is that the user cannot be trusted.

The basic message is sound: Wall Street is full of people getting paid millions who haven't the slightest understanding of math, science or technology. But that message is clear in about 10 pages and the rest is self-serving, self-promoting tripe.

It seems like personal charisma and salesmanship can become main drivers once you get to the money management level these days. Not exclusively, of course - there are a number of highly qualified and dedicated professionals who view their trade more as science than art. But the rewards are so great that the Gordon Gecko's of the world are drawn to it like moths to a flame...

I think you're correct - I recall reading an article about how the broadcasters weren't crazy about moving to HDTV, because if they pushed only DTV, they'd be able to cram something like 5x as many channels over the same bandwidth. There's waaaaayyy too many channels out there already. Half of them run infomercials or repeats much of the day anyways!

One way to reverse the "who's smarter" argument is to consider the accomplishment of understanding something. Is it easier to understand a computing language , or people? A language has a logical structure, whereas people have myriad backgrounds and motivations. I'm a computer guy at heart, but my wife (a social worker with a background in mental health) has incredible insight into how people operate, yet she wouldn't be considered a brainiac using the conventional tests.

A nerd who can only understand systems is, in reality, severely limited in their cognitive abilities.

That's an interesting point - you'd need to create output files with varying dates and times (to look like production data), log files, etc. I would think one idea would be to take a snapshot of your live environment at a given time, then create a honeypot when needed that alters file create/mod dates appropriately.
