  6. 2D vs 3D. on End Of Fox Animation · · Score: 1

The reason Fox Animation, and many good American Animation studios, have died, is due to the simple fact that most animation is falling into a very simple, and boring, cliche. Most of America would refer to animation as "something for kids" and not give it a second thought. It's something they'd take little Jimmy to go see for his birthday, but if given the opportunity to see it on their own, it's not bloody likely, unless it's made by Disney.

Oddly enough, it was Disney that started the boring childrens storybook form that pervades through American Animation (herein known as AA). AA tends to have a plot operating around kids or teenagers (child's role model) that does something truly epic against all odds, and the hero gets the girl. Stereotypical of our society.

Now, Japanese Animation (herein known as anime) has mastered the art of producing these things as well, but they have significantly more far reaching affects. Ask your local random-Joe-skippy what he thinks about anime, and chances are he'll think the same thing that he'd say about AA. Something along the lines of "oh, that stuff with the electric mouse?" Ask the same person if they've ever heard of Hentai (animated pornography), and they'll look at you funny.

Japan has managed to turn animation into the art form that we failed to turn it into during the 80s. During the 80s the anime we saw kids watching on Saturday wasn't a *mon or other similar ripoff, no, we had Transformers and Voltron. Those, while admittedly made for children, show a kind of sophistication not matched in most AA.

So, what animation studios need to learn from is the model put forth not by Disney, but by TVTokyo. Watch something produced by Gainax, such as Neon Genesis: Evangelion. Watch a comedy like The Slayers. Enjoy serious, thoughtful, animation, like Serial Experiments: Lain. Do not, on the other hand, explore the finer points of making the next Mulan. It's been done, it's no longer interesting. It still sells because it's the institution.

Yes, X11 is cool. We all know the configurability, etc, etc, but realistically people, configurability isn't what the end user market truly desires. I work at a University (I won't say which one for fear of job saftey) that has repeatedly made ignorant security decisions like the one above. The first was to disallow outside access to all ports less than or equal to 1024 (except for those machines in the server farm). While this can argueably make sense, it's painfully annoying when trying to get on irc.

Yes, I stopped caring about trying to get directly on irc and just used a shell. Not having ident is extremely painful at times, though, I must tell you.

The second ignorant decision? Firewalling off ICQ. Yes, ICQ. Apparantly ICQ presents such an amazing security risks that they cannot allow students to use it on their own computers. Naturally, I used a previously mentioned shell to run a socks5 proxy, but that's not the issue. Most people wouldn't do such things. They think that all security is the responsibility of the network administrator, and not the end user.

I should mention that they advocate the use of AIM, and use nothing but Netscape on the network right now....

Are IT professionals at colleges as ignorant as they appear to be? I find it hard to believe that people who set up a hetereogenous network of solaris, linux, aix, windows nt, and macos x servers using an oc3 uplink and fiber optic backbone connections between buildings could think that ICQ was enough of a security risk to justify firewalling it off.

Then again, they blocked port 4000 alltogether.

That viewpoint is exactly the same system of thought that leads to oppression and the stifling of progress. What would have happened if certain key historical figures had decided to focus on their spheres of influence?

I'm not trying to be a troll, but I think the importance of some movements, and the timing of others is being mistaken both ways. First of all, the Open Source Movement, which seems to be becoming very similar to a Big Brother figure for the /. community, is impressive as well as cool, but it doesn't really define the internet. The fact that Microsoft web browsers still dominate the web surfing market proves that Open Source really isn't a big deal.

The Internet isn't just the web you say? You're right, but keeping in mind that we're talking about internet culture, society and culture are often defined by the majority, and the majority of people who use the internet surf the web using Windows 98 and MSIE 5.x. These people often participate in chat...but not our all too familiar IRC. No, they use AIM, ICQ and even web-based Java chat clients.

As far as this female online movement that our wonderful Jon Katz is speaking of (I'm actually not being sarcastic, I usually like Katz columns as found in /., but I do not appreciate the depreciation of this movement that Jon Katz is creating by giving it a new stereotyped name. I can call myself a geek, but I would prefer not to have Jon Katz refer to everyone as a geek. In the same way, girls who use the internet are not "ChickClickers" or "GeekGirls", but they are girls that happen to use the internet.

Also, female useage of the net is not a new phenomena. I've been speaking to the same four or five girls on the internet for almost seven years. Also, these girls aren't unattractive geeky people, they don't care about Open Source, and they could care less about the new Feminist movements or being part of the online "community". What they do do is carry on conversations with myself and a small group of our friends on IRC.

Women have been using the net as long as men have, and any implication that the stereotypically named female online community is becoming a major factor only NOW is merely perpetuating the idea that men are the only driving force behind technology, which also seems to be a point of Katz's column.

Please, Mr. Katz, do not insult my intelligence, and do not perpetuate this patriarchal crap.

Such movements as gun control, school "safety" legislation (such as we see with this Pinkerton situation), and general parenting paranoia are unthought and motivated simply by the gag reaction the media has become so good at producing. "Oh my GOD! Look at what happened on TV Charlie! Kids are dying again!" Desensitation? No, we can't have that, we must put on our soccer mom facade and parade around promoting unrealistic ideals. That is the only way to make us look better than the neighbors.

Kids will always have access to things that kill. If you make guns illegal, only criminals and six year olds that live in crackhouses will have guns. Or anyone else who is willing to step outside the law for one. Yes, you can make things more difficult, but the only people you're going to hurt are the lawful gun owners. Look at what the war on drugs has caused. Yes, pursuits of "justice" are fine as long as they don't directly affect you.

Maybe someday people will have the common sense to think for a few seconds before they start to take a stance on something because the media tells them to. Perhaps someday people will pry the noose of NBC from their cereberum and think for themselves. Unfortunately, that day is not today.
