As soon as lyrics.ch goes back up, someone or some group should copy *EVERYTHNG* onto multiple remote servers (hopefully in a country with very loose IP law). That way, the "internation lyrics server" will become the "immortal lyrics server"! deep pockets in the way.
your post went up at 8:27. By that time, it's very dark in Montreal. In January, it gets dark at about 4-4:30 (local) in Seattle. Montreal, being farther north, must get dark sooner. The cam isnt broken, there just isnt enough light.
actually, the cats OWN us, instead of us owning them. When they howl or cry, we feed then, brush them, give them water, attention, and such. When we scream at the cats, they look mildly bored, lick their asses and walk out of the room... Who is being subjugated here?
Right on, Jon. The AC posts are a vital part of slashdot discussions. Forcing everyone to log in to post on/. would be a mistake. The idea of the internet is that it allows many-to-many distribution of ideas and news, as opposed to the few-to-many architecture of newspapers or broadcast TV/radio. If you don't like inane, off-topic, or offensive posts, set your threshold to 1 (or 2 if you have a very short attention span). If you want to hear what EVERYONE has to say (like I do), set your threshold to -2. Banning AC posts will not boost the signal-noise ratio on/. Everyone on IRC has a name, and that hasn't forced it to become a civilized forum. Why would forcing everyone here to take a pseudonym change anything?

This sort of thing happens hen you build ATM software in visual basic. Of course, the ATMs at my bank look like they're probably running Fortran based programs under CPM...
Not all windows programmers work for Big Bill. I hear a lot of moaning and bitching from the die hard Gnazis out there over this idea, but there *is* good software for windows (even open source software, like LiteStep, POV-ray, Fractint, ports of Emacs and The Gimp, etc). If the Linux movement can capture some of them, it will be a Good Thing(tm). This could combine the open standards and stability of Linux with the huge number of applications and user base of Windows. Now if only a few good UI designers would defect from Apple...
This "f-ck the world, f-ck the rich, I'm being persecuted by the coporations, we must rise up against the oppression" meme has gotten out of hand on on slashdot recently. The record companies' crime is stupidity, not malice. This is exactly the attitude that has led to the current attitude the big labels have toward MP3. This is what will destroy any trust-based system for MP3 ditribution, and lead to us all being treated like theives.
This definitely falls under "stuff that mattes". Furthermore, you shouldn't limit "News for Nerds" to mean "news about computers". This is what's going on in the RealWorld(tm). It is "stuff that matters". And, above all, if you don't like it, don't read it. Maybe you should start an "anonymous coward anti-politics page" I promise never to browse by.
a) You are not required to tell the banks any of this information. You will, if you want to open an account. b) The only reason they get all these demographics is because people choose to use cheques or VISA. but what will they use it for? to better serve the poor fools with small accounts? I think not. What's all the excitement about? c) Consumer trials of stored value cards have consistently returned poor results which is why we still need banks... Some of us are just now learning to value our privacy, and we don't like the sound of this.
Jon has gone out of his way to point out that most linux geeks are extremely helpful, and you roast him for it! What sort of thanks is that? Back off. If we (as a/. community) don't cool it, his next article will appear on MSNBC under the headline "Why Linux Users are Like Religious Zealots and Not to be Taken Seriously". Alienating new users will assure that linux stays on the fringes of the computer world FOREVER.
there's a big difference that xinit is missing. To check the serial number on my tv/vcr/bicycle/processor case/whatnot the police need physical access to my property. That has a nice way of requiring them to do inconvenient, archaic things like *getting a search warrent*. I don't want a unique ID for my CPU accessable to any e-business and two bit script-kid cracker out there! Once I buy a processor, it becomes my physical property. Intel has no right (or need) to know where I put it or what I do with it.

they would just send you the "new and improved" version. Mailing you a new CD is a lot cheaper than refunding your money. Which do YOU think they would do?
Why not just submerge the whole motherboard in mineral oil, like they do for high voltage transformers? This could keep your Voodoo IIs from overheating trying to run Unreal if you put the video card in too. The only hitch would be keeping connectors (mouse, keybd, SIMMs, ect) from getting contaminated with oil.
OK, Troll-boy, I'll bite. >>The weak, slug-like x86 architecture is far too lame to be able to handle PSX games. no. PSXemu runs nicely on my P225/MMX *WITHOUT* any 3D acceleration.
>>obsolete CPU architecture Is worse than obsolete OS architecture?
>>like Apple's G3 Motorola has made every Mac processor since the 68000, not Apple
The court refused to review the case, which is not the same as ruling in favor of algorithm patents. As this stands, the decision changes nothing (except our hopes that an asinine law might be overturned). Also, I'm on my way out to patent "and". It will now be referred to as "AND(tm)". The AND(tm) function will be available for licensing along with the forthcoming OR(tm), XOR(tm), and NOT(tm) by the middle of next year... Happy programming
I have two arguments against the current draft of the widgets, and they both stem from this mouseOver foolishness. I want to know instantly when I look at a page what is interactive content and what is art. The buttons don't even have a border until you put the pointer over them! The only result to come from this is that all Mozilla users will have to pixel-hunt for their buttons. Also, I don't like having things flicker when I move the mouse pointer. It's distracting, and it doesn't really help the user find anything.

But so will our pentiums. (and ours will do it in an ugly grey case) Computers weren't meant to be used forever.
