Are you suggesting (pure) democracy does not work? Are the Arab countries informed about this issue? I think they should know this before bombs start dropping demanding democracy.

Pure the fact /. is reporting a possible GUI change of Google's search engine shows a) Google with this much attention will become head of Bubble "2.0" and b) /. will, if they not change course, share responsibility.

People have been saying this and I will say it again: these are signs of a new internet bubble. People (tend to?) forget. Lessons are learned the hard way.
Although Google's image and bank deposit have become big, be aware their revenues are almost 100% dependent of advertisement revenues. This is a market which can turn upside down in a second.

  6. The real issue at hand... on Babies Can Learn Words as Early as 10 Months · · Score: 1

Capacity isn't the issue. We are all born with brains. What scientists are researching is to what extent can the development of communication skills be accelerated. We all know babies can learn a language or two just by observing and practically duplicating what they are hearing and seeing. The real matter at hand is how can we interact (read: train) with babies making them more conscious about their communication capability and thus help them develop that skill?

Probably good. The slashdot community has a vast majority of open [concept here] supporters. From Wikipedia to Linux. Two questions arise: how will the world react if they get to know of this movement? And will this movement become powerful enough to open things in the real world, for example influencing the [non-software part] patent system?

Read the thread. Dozens of people have already reconfirmed that all Chinese people look the same. It's a well known prejudice and simply not funny when repeated a couple of times. Joke's over, ok?

  9. Use machines instead of humans on Human-Powered Internet Archive Book Project · · Score: 0

I have seen a video how Google is adding its books to their database: a huge machine which can automatically turn over a page and continue to scan very rapidly. I guess that these 100+ year-old books would need subtility but scanning al those pages manually is a pain in the ass.

Let us start with basic of all knowledgde: language. You can not convince me that youngster are becoming more articulate in their language. In the Netherlands we have this huge language problem: kids are becoming less skillful in language because of the lack using it properly. I think chatting, watching and reading street talks aren't making things more easy.
