    Due process (rest of the gitmo detainees)
    Protection from cruel and usual punishment (um, hello?)
    Right to peaceably assemble (protests at RNC and Presidential Inauguration)
    Prevention of the federal government from assuming powers not granted in the constitution (war on drugs)

    Ironically, the grant was for a study into the detrimental effects of intelligent design on Canadian academics and leaders.

    That's what you expect! That haughty religious folk who Don't Like Your Beliefs will make decisions based on their magic sky deity and try to punish you for it.

    Irony is when events do not unfold as usual. For example, researching how creationism is bad and having the fundies actually consider the point and even help. That would be irony.

    They tried this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loonatics), but the animators couldn't resist tweaking the formula a bit. There were pigs being slaughtered, women were wailing, and men were gnashing their teeth. It was horrible.

    I think there should be an "opt out" scheme whereby if one dies, by default, one's relatives can send in proof of the death and be granted access to accounts (email and otherwise).

    Sounds nice, but that idea is utterly defenseless against fraud.

    I was thinking of purchasing a machine from Dell a little while ago -- tired of the hassle involved in building my own. They absolutely refused to sell me a machine without windows, even though I already own a legitimate copy of the exact same OS.

    Hmm, actually Wikipedia agrees with my original assessment:

    The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the privilege against self-incrimination applies whether the witness is in Federal or state court (see Malloy v. Hogan, 378 U.S. 1 (1964)), and whether the proceeding itself is criminal or civil (see McCarthy v. Arndstein, 266 U.S. 34 (1924)).

    As much as they're probably guilty, the court should not be able to say "prove you didn't do X or we'll hold it against you"

    Usually, the ones who produce it (and can make money off subscription purchases) don't use such tactics. The sites you're referring to are solely in it for the ad/spyware-based revenue, and just mooch free stuff from the former.

    However, they are a good source for free stuff if you know what you're doing :)

    I'm not much into MMORPGs, but don't most of the Sims/Everquest expansion packs cost ~$20? And for that you get a whole new section of the map, maybe a new class or skills, weapons, armour and monsters.

    Um, isn't their a far easier low-tech solution?

    When I had a hopelessly-hosed machine (at least for my level of expertise), I decided it was time to spoil myself with a bigger hard drive. Installed it, loaded windows, then connected the old one as a slave. Copied all the data I needed (stuff from c:\games and c:\music) that wasn't infected and lived happily ever after.
