No problem with AjaxWindows. I don't see a lawsuit coming at all! (If Lindows causes a lawsuit, then AjaxWindows (combining the power of TWO trademarked names) should solve the problem!)
In April, it's fun to search the file sharing networks for ".tax" files (and other common files used for tax returns by Turbo Tx, Taxcut, etc.)
I would never recommend viewing such information or committing any crimes, but it's interesting to see one IP address with tens or hundreds of tax returns shared. If you hire an outside tax preparer, be aware!
Imagine - your SSN, name, address, a list of banks that have paid you interest, a list of stocks that you own, your taxable income and amount of tax paid (which the IRS uses as proof that you are who you say you are, if you perform an online inquiry), etc.
And the victim doesn't even realize that their PAID PREPARER is sharing the information with the world! No lie! There are hundreds available every April!
PS, Don't try to call any of the individuals and tip them off - they have a tendency to shoot the messenger!
Well, I was speaking specifically of a suspected dangerous criminal of a capital crime such as murder, with enough evidence to hold him or her in a jail cell.
That, to me, is the "with reason" part of my explanation. I thought you'd infer that! ha ha.
Sorry, Poetmatt, I think your math is wrong. I read the whole paragraph and thought EXACTLY as the parent thought - that they have it backwards - the LAST reading has the most weight - a full 50% of the weight. The second last has 25%, the third last has 12.5% weight, and the rest combined make up the other 12.5%.
Of course it really makes a difference what they mean when they say that successive readings are averaged in. For example, if they averaged the first 2, and stored the result, and then averaged the 3rd with 2 times the stored result, then this would be correct averaging. And if they took the average of the first 29 readings, and multiplied it by 29 and then averaged in the 30th one, all would be fine as well.
Sort of makes you want to SEE THE SOURCE CODE TO MOUNT A DEFENSE!
One day, very soon, it will become economical to buy a solar-powered wi-fi router, with a built-in software chip (think bit-torrent), and drop it on the ground near Starbucks (or some other open Wi-fi).
This clever, patent-pending device will act as a distributor/reflector of music and warez (does anyone use that term anymore), and will add to the misery of the mafIAA.
I can just see hoards of people willing to go spend $69 to buy one of these, and drop it into a remote location... the same people who aren't willing to license all their music.
What do you think?
(PS I'm kidding on the patent pending... you want to take this idea and run with it, go for it! I have 5000 more, that are just as bad!)
Nope, I just went to HP's site and looked at the cheapest system I could find. Windows was included, no additional charge. It's free. Just like Search. (just because Search isn't listed on a Bill of Materials, does not mean that your dollars aren't paying for it.)
Google didn't do ANY evil to me, it is a free service for me.
M$ on the other hand provides its mediocre software force-fed to me.
Devil's Advocate:
Microsoft Windows is free software to me. I buy a PC, and it comes with Windows. Sure, HP or Dell has to pay for it, but I don't.
My sarcastic comment, above, is parallel to your comment about Google Search being free. Someone is paying for Google Search, and the costs are most certainly being passed along to the consumer somewhere along the line. Just because you don't see it itemized doesn't mean that you aren't paying for it.
So why, again, is Google so good, and Microsoft so evil? Because Google plays the shell game better?
Why don't you ping their web server (Ping resolves the name to an IP address immediately). And do a NSLOOKUP on their mail server (MX record for the domain). Use dnsstuff.com to show the IPs that way. Then you'll get an idea of some of their IP's although they can be offsite, too.
then do a tracrt to the IP addresses found. Add and subtract one, and see if it tracert's to approximately the same place. You may be able to get a good idea that way of the names and locations with reverse DNS being returned on the tracert. You should be able to compile a good guess at the range(s) that way. Then use the article in question to see if you can find any correlation.
And the drop-off in stock price was in after hours trading Thursday Night/Friday Morning. NOT Wednesday!
Flamebait and inaccurate article should be removed. Or "buried", as my friend says.
HTTP is stateless. You cannot get meaningful data from these statistics. Pretty charts, yes. Reliable, meaningful data, no.
Tell me again how you add these apples and oranges: one user opens a site, thoroughly reads a page, studying it for an hour, and yet times out in 20 minutes. Another user opens it in a secondary tab, gets a cup of coffee, answers the phone, in 19 minutes clicks on that tab to see that he was at the wrong page, clicks on another page on that site, and then gives up (timing out in 19+20 minutes).

No, Don't take them too seriously.
This discussion is making my head spin. Who wants to go play pool?
You really should see a doctor.

Everyone deserves Liberty except convicted and suspected criminals (within reason).
Even Jeep.

OK, that's it for now - I have to run down to the ATM machine and put in my PIN number...
If only there were a numerical equation to approximate the probability of this occurring, preferably in three space dimensions.

Stupid Google Stars... I'm looking for Kamino, just beyond the Outer Rim, and I can't find it. It's like someone has removed it!
I told my kids about the upcoming eclipse, and I was excited to see them enthusiastic, until one said "What channel will it be on?"
You pay for the Google Adwords that a company runs, with every product that you purchase, even if you use Yahoo for your searching. Get it?

His ultimate goal, though, is to get his buddy Elton to be a Rocket Man, and get David Bowie up into his tin can, high above the world.

55 Words per minute? Please don't type so fast, as I am a slow reader.
wow. You really don't get it!

It's meaningless, unreliable data.
You should run something that will handle any technology that comes along in the future...

I thought for sure your Screenshots link would include at least one Blue Screen of Death.
