Why not just use a SHA-512 hash of the password? Why use a chain-saw when what you need is a nail-cutter? Public key crypto is far too cumbersome for something like this. For securing the password, just hash it and store the hash in the program. Take the hash of the password that the user inputs and compare. duh?

  4. What speed does the figure represent? on ISPs Offer Faster Speeds, Why Don't We Get Them? · · Score: 1

Theory1: The speed advertised by the companies is very often the speed at which their servers pump data to your modem. Or perhaps the speed on the last mile of fibre. The internet is made of so many machines with so many types of connections that the speed that you ultimately get is the lowest of the combination. Simple example: I set up a server with 100Kbps connection. A user surfs my site using a 1Mbps connection. What speed will he get? 1Mbps? He'll be lucky to get even 100Kbps.

Theory2: The companies advertising a 1Mbps connection may be capping the download speed to about 60% of the total and the rest of the bandwidth is for uploads. Just a guess, don't really know.

  5. Ho-hum. on Wal-Mart to Offer Components for DIY Computers · · Score: 1

So whats the big deal? They'll probably sell for $200 what I have been doing in $75 for my customers. I've been assembling computers since quite some time now and don't see it as a great thing. Everything fits together perfectly and it would take a real moron to screw things up while assembling a comp.

  6. How about brain waves? on Software Lets Programmers Code Hands-free · · Score: 1

How about programming using the mind? We'll start finding code strewn intermittently with obscenities and porn. I remember an experiment at MIT in which they moved the mouse pointer using thoughts. At least its better than having a commotion in the office. Why not just design a better keyboard?

  7. Why should outsourcing be an issue? on The Future of IT in America? · · Score: 1

Outsourcing shouldn't be an issue at all. If Americans were half as competent as their Indian counterparts and half as hard-working as their Chinese counterparts, then there would be no outsourcing of tech jobs to these countries. 1. Americans leave on the dot at 5pm - Indians and Chinese are more dedicated to their work. 2. Americans that I have encountered when I was doing my Masters in Computer Science in USA asked me if elephants are still used as transport in India. 3. Americans also asked me if we have internet in India. 4. Due to the heavy American accent, most of the americans have difficulty understanding what Indians are saying, leave alone the Chinese speaking community. Indians on the other hand have little trouble understanding a wide range of dialects. This is probably due to the higher standard of undergraduate education in India. This dumbness and WORLD=AMERICA syndrome is very prevalent among undergrads. And at the Grad level (Masters and Phd), there were NO Americans - ZERO. There were only Indians and Chinese. If you want jobs, then deserve them. Don't feel cheated if someone outperforms you. Work harder and strive to be better than the competition.

  8. The end of freedom as we know it on Philips Patents Technology to Force Ad Viewing · · Score: 1

Why don't they just reserve one channel ONLY for ads? Maybe they can even categorize these ads so that if someone wants to buy a car, they don't have to just sit and watch ads for burger king until a chevrolet ad finally comes by. That way, the person can choose not only what ads to see, but also WHEN to see them. Statistically, there is probably more time devoted to the ads than the programs/movies themselves. And forcing the viewer to watch ads may just result in a long-needed revolution or total boycott of entertainment media. Its simmering, just about ready to pop. I say, don't force anyone to do anything, it takes away the joy, the purpose and most importantly, the freedom created by the media. No cybernazis please.
