He would place this device on his child without the kid knowing about it. If the kid went somewhere unauthorized then Dick would torture the kid until the truth of the activities was revealed. Let's do everything it takes to keep our kids safe.
Sure, a hammer can be used for legitimate purposes but we all know how deadly a hammer can be when you want to hurt somebody. Ban hammers now so we'll all be safer.
I'm a visionary. Clean and plentiful personal energy production could begin with a breakthrough like this. Apparently some others agree with me because my post is modded up.
Developments like this are why I think emphasis on conservation at the expense of research into cheap and clean power generation is misguided. I hear a lot of talk from environmentalists about getting people out of their cars. The real effect of those policies will be to get poor people out of their cars while rich people will continue to enjoy the material advantages that personal transportation offers.
I'd rather research cheap and clean power sources and keep poor people in their cars. That's social justice.
Why did EBay agree to the terms where they did not get control of the source when they bought Skype? Shame on Ebay for making this possible when they bought Skype with a bajillion of their shareholders money. I predict that this will lead to a class action suit by Ebay shareholders against Ebay.
It is not raising my eyebrows. Most large scale internet apps are abandoning RDBMS in favor of distributed key value storage. Oracle will live a long time feasting off the carcass of existing customers but that will surely dwindle over time as the cool kids continue to do their own non-RDBMS thing.
The FTC should focus on other things. Things like reconsidering whether working at the FTC will really ever help them score with hot women.
Wow damburger! Thanks for grounding us all in reality. It must be hard for you to read about these accomplishments from that easy chair in your parent's basement. Pop another beer and keep commenting. Thanks for all of the hard work. Tell us about one of your projects.
VOIP users can obtain a public-key private-key pair. In my home I could have my voip phone encrypt my voice output with your public key when I am speaking with you. Only you can decrypt it because you control the your private key. There is not any wiretapping scheme that can defeat this system unless the government coerces your private key from you. If the government asked for my private key then I would simply exercise my right to remain silent.
Russia considers Skype a threat. I wonder if this shut down is an effort to kill off my idea for using Skype to communicate on hostile internets. I wanted to create a skype Extra that uses PGP to encrypt the voice traffic between two parties communicating on a network that is controlled by an oppressive government that does not respect privacy.
Your parents and your grandparents may still care about sparc and solaris for running their large vertically scaled applications that were designed with Bill Clinton was president.
All of the cool kids have long since moved to horizontally scaled apps running on Linux and cheap generic hardware. Oracle is simply saying that they will feast a little longer on the shrinking carcass of Sun.
I don't agree with your definition. My car has a manual transmission because I think that is fun. I drive it everyday but it feels more like a hobby than a requirement. I don't expect to find manual transmission rental cars when I travel.
This is sort of like asking if the University is friendly to Ham Radio operators. The honest answer is 'no' and that the hobbyists will have to continue to cobble together their own solutions.
Oracle is beginning it's own long slow decline. The large apps on the internet are all moving away from RDBMS and into scalable key value stores. Oracle will only get to remain in the G&A aspects of those business, not in the front line internet customer apps. Read 'The Innovator's Dilemma', it is happening to Oracle. Get out while you can.
I wish I had mod points today because this is one of the most insightful and simple things I have seen posted on Slashdot. Engineers need interesting work and great colleagues. Without those things, the great engineers will bail and a vicious downward spiral will begin. This is why I am never surprised when government sponsored information system re-writes spend millions of dollars and never finish (California DMV).
Why have a restriction against companies? Companies are merely voluntary collectives of individual people. Can't individuals freely decide to pool their resources?
It not only will prevent the UK government from doing this, it will send a signal to the world about how stupid it is to persecute gays. Persecuting gays is still desired in most of the world, including by a shrinking majority in the USA.
Yes, there are issues, and those companies are being driven by free market demand for their cloud products to continue to improve them. They have the resources and the will to make the clouds better and better over time. Would you be able to keep up if you decided to establish your own data center for your own needs? I don't think so.

smoker2,
Can't is just be a matter of individual choice?
You don't like cars, so you structure your life to avoid them.
I like cars so I am free to decide to make them a part of my life.
Each of us is free and not coerced in this decision. Is there anything wrong with that?

so get me with the gas tax. That seems fair.

How are you bending over backwards to support my lifestyle?
My hobbies and lifestyle require lots of personal driving over long distances. Therefore, I am against this.

Sure. But what's your point? Do you want to enable private communication or not?

Your plan is doomed if your vision for Linux requires forcing people to shut up. The free marketplace of ideas will prevail, one way or the other.

You mean like Google and Amazon?
> The front line customer apps is not where the money is. It never was, and it never will.
Tell that to Google. Tell that to Amazon. Tell that to EBay.
