  1. Another Pulse anecdote on PulseAudio Creator Responds To Critics · · Score: 1

I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my new AMD64 laptop and tried to play some music. Aqualung (my preferred player) did not work properly with Pulse's ALSA emulation. For example, switching tracks caused a delay of several seconds. Next I tried to switch to Audacious, but it also behaved weirdly, and the sound quality was horrible. I also think I had problems with other applications. Next, I got rid of pulseaudio and suddenly everything worked 100%. Just reading this thread shows that this is not an uncommon experience. Conclusion: Pulseaudio is not ready to be installed by default on desktop systems.

Apparently, many (if not most) people occasionally recall events from past lives once they get to advanced stages of meditation. In the usual, confused state of mind, you can barely remember the events of previous day, so it's kind of reasonable that you don't recall past lives either. Unfortunately, hardly anyone has the inclination (or karma, if you will) to dedicate a significant portion of their lives to meditation. You don't realize how significant and life-changing the practice is, until after you've done it for a while.

  7. Re:MythTV could be great. on MythTV Compared with Windows Media Center · · Score: 1

Yeah, it's too complicated. I've used Debian exclusively for almost 10 years at home and at work, and I have some experience with installing and configuring software. I tried to install MythTV two times and ran out of patience on both occasions. Last time, I was getting some weird errors from MySQL and the thing wouldn't run. I may be getting too old for this or something, but debugging a database server to watch TV is too much for me.

(I recently started using Klear because Kaffeine SIGSEGVs all the time. A GNOME app for DVB with tuning, deinterlacing and timed recording would be very nice.)

  13. the real punishment on Sony Rootkit Settlement Gets Judge's Approval · · Score: 1

Sony's real punishment comes in the form of antipathy from customers. Previously I didn't have anything against Sony. After this mess, merely seeing their logo makes me feel a bit sick. I definitely won't buy anything made by Sony in the near future (probably at least a few years), even if the product has nothing to do with their music division. Maybe ordinary people (non-Slashdot readers) don't feel quite as strongly about it, but even so, this incident will cost Sony a lot in terms of lost sales and damage to their corporate image.

why the EU has this kind of power over Microsoft? I thought that Microsoft is a U.S. based company that must obey U.S. laws.

Of course you have to obey the laws of the country you do business in. Let's say a hypothetical company in Fuckmenistan is allowed to kidnap and murder their competitors at will, according to Fuckmenistan's laws. Now are you saying that they should be able to do this in the U.S. too, because they are a "Fuckmenistan based company"?

A downside where it's even easier to create viruses and worms that cripple Windows, given an intimate knowledge of it's propritary inner workings.

Well, intimate knowledge of inner workings of Linux is available freely, but not many viruses and worms seem to be roaming around. Maybe more openness could be a good thing, if MS is willing to improve their products based on criticism? Also, this is probably not about the inner working of the OS, but communication protocols.
