Brin's more general problem was that there wasn't a good tool to teach low level programming ideas to. Almost every other language requires too much overhead to do anything (java) or can only run in it's limited environment (smalltalk). A program is actually a sequential series of instructions, typified by basic's line numbers. One of a kid's first breakthroughs is when he discovers that you can insert extra lines between 10 and 20. And GOTO is actual a fundamental instruction that every programmer needs to understand. BASIC is the gateway to assembly, and OOP. You learn (and learn to appreciate) both by raeching the limits of BASIC (and the power of C.) Look at all the clueless PHP/VB coders to see what happens when you take away understanding of computers. Or look at the few LISP and SMALLTALK elitists who don't understand that a computer program is actually supposed to do something useful, who probably started out with a pointless academic exercise like LOGO.

Great idea. Or here's another one -- split the power 3 ways, and force those in power to take a stand on issues, to come out for or against them.

Other heads of state take the same precautions and I'm sure when they all get together in one place, they take even more. Why would Condaleeza Rice remember one specific incident. Ask her "Did she go to the G8 summit in Italy?" she'd probably remember it. Ask her, "Did you know that there are flight restrictions in place wherever the president goes?" She say of course. You can go ahead and try to defend your stupidity, but I'm warning you, you're at a great disadvantage, since your stupidity is the the only weapon you have to try to mask it.

The price of a sailing boat is what the market will bear. It could be a lot less. And it is definitely more expensive than a diesel powered boat. The masts, sails, and rigging, are a big factor in this. But a comparable motor boat costs the same, even though $20,000 worth of rigging is replaced by a $5000 engine and prop. That's because you're paying for the capability, not the method, which means it's demand driven. Of course the result is, a premium motor yacht has a lot more bells and whistles than a sail boat. Fuel weighs a lot less than batteries.

I'm uninsured and I'm not poor. It's a ripoff, as any poor person can tell you. If I save $300/month instead of paying for insurance, even at current ridiculous medical prices, that's a baby every other year, braces and one broken bone for each of them. If one of my kids get's leukemia, she'll live or die anyway, though the government might force me into bankruptcy to pay $100,000 for some quackery that is just as likely to kill her as the disease, and no more likely to save her than a spontaneous remission. But that's life. I hope my kids don't get leukemia. And I hope they don't need braces or break their arms either. When I'm old, I'm not gonna pay $1000 a month for pills to keep me alive, but insurance wouldn't pay it either. If medicare were gone, the pill companies would be happy getting my $100 social security check and keeping me alive. I hope my kids'll support me too, if I haven't saved enough. Maybe my daughter's braces (after battling the leukemia that bankrupted me) will get her a doctor for a husband and even though he won't give me free pills, he'll be grateful enough to his wife's parents for raising such a wonderful, that he'd let me live in the basement and she'd take care of me, and I'd have grandkids who'll listen to my stories and lessen the pains of old age.

The USA still has positive population growth, excluding immigration. That means that while there are more baby boomers than the generation that begat them (their parents), they also had more children, who also have had more children. There was an increase in the rate of population growth, hence the term "baby boom" and there was a slowing in the population increase. In other words, even with zero immigration, there are more hands to wipe than butts that need wiped.

The chairman/CEO situation is almost always dependent on the role of the person within the company. In the case of Bill Gates, he was a founder and the largest shareholder of the company, so he was chairman, and had been CEO since before Microsoft went public. In cases like Michael Eisner of Disney, due to his successful role as CEO, he became a larger shareholder and gained the confidence of other shareholders, thus becoming CEO. In the case of HP, Carly Fiorina was hired by the board to run the company as CEO. She was an employee, who did not represent a controlling stake in the company (and thus did not sit on the board of directors), and was dismissed as an employee. Sometimes businesses give honorary directorships to CEOs of other businesses or both businesses might have controlling shareholders in common, a situation that is very common, since institutional investors (i.e., mutual fund controllers, etc.) control the bulk of funds, and thus might put known individuals on several boards.
