  1. iTunes EULA on Apple Responds to iTunes Spying Allegations · · Score: 2, Interesting

    It's a bit funny that the iTunes software agreement explicitly states that Gracenote CDDB uses a session id for tracking, while they omit the same information for the iTunes Music Store.

    Taken from Software License Agreement for iTunes
    The Gracenote CDDB Service uses a unique identifier to track queries for statistical purposes. The purpose of a randomly assigned numeric identifier is to allow the Gracenote CDDB service to count queries without knowing anything about who you are. For more information, see the web page for the Gracenote Privacy Policy for the Gracenote CDDB Service.

    That's it! I'm putting in a suggestion to my company that we put in this 3rd party patch for the few Windows servers we have left.

  3. Better Material? on Demise of C++? · · Score: 1

    I subscribed to CUJ for some time, and I can say that I can get 3/4 of the same information from a single good C++ reference book as I can in every issue I got in the 2 1/2 years I subscribed. The reference, however, is much more efficient.

    Einstein who wanted to know God's thoughts constantly disregarded what people told him were already settled issues to unlock mysteries that are still not well understood today.

    It is pretty well accepted that Einstein's references to God are more allegorical than literal.

    "I cannot conceive of a God who rewards and punishes his creatures, or has a will of the kind that we experience in ourselves. Neither can I nor would I want to conceive of an individual that survives his physical death; let feeble souls, from fear or absurd egoism, cherish such thoughts. I am satisfied with the mystery of the eternity of life and with the awareness and a glimpse of the marvelous structure of the existing world, together with the devoted striving to comprehend a portion, be it ever so tiny, of the Reason that manifests itself in nature." It is very sad for a UNIX distribution if its closest comparable OSs are Windows, C64 and Apple II.

    I see them like a Kamikaze pilot. They were doomed anyway, so their last act of desperation is to take out their competition.

    They seem to blame their business problems on Linux. In no way can their junk operating system be to blame for their decline in revinue. Anyone use a SCO box? I am forced to deal with them on occasion. The older versions even made you pay extra IF YOU WANTED A TCP STACK!

    The only saving grace of their UNIX OpenServer was the Skunkware disc that prepackaged - what? - GNU and other open source products!!! They don't deserve the priveledge of slapping their name on any product of that quality.

    I have seen benchmarks that suggest that equivalent Java may be just as fast or faster than C code in some cases. This has to do with the JIT compiler, the benefits of asynchronous garbage collection, and compile-time optimizations, as I recall.

    Of course, there is nothing you can do in Java that can't be done in C... so I guess you are just putting poorly written C against poorly written Java.

    I'm waiting for the time when C--, uh, I mean C# gets edged out.

    Point taken. I should not have invoked argument fallacies. To lose market share, however, would not be considered any sort of success by M$. The sad thing, too, is that the users that don't know their CD tray from a cup holder are the ones who need a more stable environment. It's a shame that the marketing and Play-Doh user interface lulls them into warm-fuzzies about the product.

    If Vista is a marketing success, then MS will dominate for a long time on the x86 desktop.

    Seems like circular reasoning to me. Any operating system which is a marketing success should dominate the market.
