...why Mira Furlan got very pissy with me when I asked her at DragonCon this year if she was looking forward to the possibility of her returning in the upcoming productions of B5. I was very nice to her, but she turned into a rather hateful person in less than.2 seconds after I asked the question. I felt like she would kill me on the spot if she could have gotten away with it, judging by her expression & body language as well. It was a very disappointing experience meeting her, for I admired her work on the show, and thought better of her.
I can only assume that either she asked for too much money to return, or she ticked somebody off during her time on the show. After seeing a glimpse of her temper, and her almost insignificant parts on other shows since B5, I think I know the answer.
I am glad to see the series revived somewhat though, for it was a decent sci-fi show. I do not think they will regret the decision of producing the direct-to-DVD shows. It will do well, just as the past DVD releases have I'm sure.
I do not think that would be wise, for I fear that may speed things up so that they can kill more people quicker. I really think that is what would happen. Historically, people in those regions have fought for thousands of years. I for one, do not ever see a democracy happening over there either. The law of the land over there is that the toughest SOB rules the land, and that SOB will do whatever it takes to do that, even if it means using things that go "Ka-Booooom," not just boom..... I think there are some people over there just crazy enough to do that.
I think it is in the worlds best interest that all nuclear countries keep their tech to themselves, rather than having such technology in a place so prone to violence. Eventually they will get nuclear tech, but why speed things up, they do have a large energy resource as it is. Bigger guns they do not need. They kill each other fine the way it is, without the worry of polluting the rest of the world with horrific radiological contaminants.
I work in emergency medicine (have for many years), and am currently working on my Phd in pharmacy. I have seen first hand infants who have died, and the death attributed to SIDS. I am going to dispel the misconceptions here & now about your comment on "shaking" and other similar accusations.
Shaking or slapping a child causing injury to the brain leaves signs & is easily recognizable. Battle's signs (bruising behind the ears) are prevalent in such a case of abuse, even post mortem. Abuse is easy to spot for a trained professional. Battle's signs is only one of many signs we look for to spot deaths caused by potential abuse. Edema (swelling), contusions or ecchymosis (bruising, which can also be seen on/in the brain during autopsy) are some of the most common signs.
Asphyxiation (suffocation) can be ruled out quickly on scene. Petechial hemorrhages (burst blood vessels) are seen in the eyes, neck and face, if asphyxiation is the cause of death. The signs of this are also present in the lungs post mortem.
SIDS is respiratory in nature. The infant's respiratory system shuts down, which then induces cardiac arrest (due to lack of oxygen from not breathing), then death. There is no visible trauma to an infant that dies of SIDS, external or internal. Extensive testing is done to see if there are any other prevalent problems that may have caused the infants death. Everything is ruled out prior to labeling the cause as SIDS. All possibilities are examined.
It is wonderful that a commonality has been found, which may lead to a better diagnosis of this terrible malady. At the very least, perhaps now this will give doctors a definitive way to determine what children are at risk and allow them to inform parents so that steps can be taken to monitor their children. Training can be given, in the forum of infant CPR (some hospitals now require it of parents, some do not) which can sustain the life of the child until trained medical personnel arrive.
Little is known about why these children stop breathing. The more that can be found out, the better. The children are our future and we had better protect them.
Here are some interesting statistical facts for you:
Most SIDS attributed deaths occur for infants between 2-4 months of age.
SIDS has/can occur in infants under 1yr of age.
...has admittedly probably cut into some of the profits of CD's, but let's be more realistic and honest. DRM has/is doing more, in addition to poor quality talent being promoted by the *AA's and outrageous pricing, to damage CD sales more than anything else. The CD is not dead yet, and probably will not be for some time, but the *AA's continued ignorance will assuredly facilitate a faster demise. It seems they do now have the insight to see the end coming for this form of media at least, but still lack the common intellect of the average individual to see why...
...the gift horse in the mouth then kicked it squarely in the balls just like the *AA's have been doing for years. They have just kicked the best free advertisement they could have had to the curb. Granted, the material may be copyrighted, but the quality is extremely poor. The material is seen by persons who then sometimes seek out and want to purchase higher quality videos/music to support various forums of artistic expression. Nice way to shut out customers that they could have gotten for free. I guess they must be preparing to earn their money through lawsuits rather than through a legitimate business transaction which wins over customers. Money seems to be one helluva drug, seeing how it blinds upper corporate echelon.
I work in medicine.
A cyclotron is just simply a big circular magnet. Electrocution from the power driving the magnets is the most dangerous thing possible, IMHO. Sheilding in the area where the drugs are bombarded by the machine to create the isotopes is quite adequate. Handeling procedures in place for these drugs and machines used in their production by the FDA, NRC, & other medical oversite organizations is very extensive.
Here are just a few drugs off the top of my head that are used commonly that have short useful working span:
Technetium-99m has a half-life of 6 hours.
Fludeoxyglucose has a half-life of 109.8 minutes.
C-11 methionine has a half-life of 20 minutes....and the list goes on.
Many drugs used in diagnosis & treatment of cancers & other ailments require an on-site cyclotron because of the short half-life. It is not possibly to make these drugs in the lower states & fly them to Alaska in a timely mannor for them to be effective for dianosis and/or treatment.
What this gentelman wants to do is needed & I commend him for trying to help others. The people who are against him building this thing are not very well informed.
...if everyone would just jail spammers for life, or even better, execute them publicly using the wet noodle method.
