Although I'm not particularly interested in arguing (or looking up the numbers), many murders are due to crimes of passion and drunken arguments. Additionally, being a prostitute does mean it's ok for someone to murder you, which is what your response seems to imply (or at least mitigate). There aren't throw-away people as you describe them (well, there are, but we call them the Congress). And the government requires evidence to investigate? Just like they require warrants for wiretaps, right?

... but what is the scientific unit for "in"-ness? How do you quantify "in"-ness? And since when does 1,200 students of the millions in college (in the US) constitute a significant research sample size? What is that -- like less than 1% of 1%? It's not even a plurality of students. Typical uselss reporting. I'd even go so far as to accuse this "research" to be nothing more than Apple propaganda.

Phish does this as well, or at least used to as of a year or two ago. For roughly the same prices, you could download flac or mp3 formats of their live shows. Also posted within a day or two of the show. They also provided the album art in pdf format, even the cd art. A guy I burned some shows for printed out all the artwork and labels and it looked great - every bit as good as store bought. I say very progressive.

Yes, the point of business is profit, like it or not. Don't kid yourself for a split-second that any business has other aims or goals. Profit has never been a "side effect" and never will. And business will go to whatever (extreme) measures they feel are necessary to protect and grow their investment. Do you think people in that industry work 40-hour weeks for your benefit, for your enjoyment? Ha. So naive it hurts.

  11. On Art And Interpretation on Algorithms Determine Mona Lisa's True Emotions · · Score: 1

As interesting as it is to use science to try to interpret images, interpeting art is something far different. Whenever someone mentions this topic, I am reminded of a quote by Marcel Duchamp: "The creative act is not formed by the artist alone; the spectator brings the work in contact with the external world by deciphering and interpreting its inner qualifications and thus adds his contribution to the creative act."

What he's talking about here is the "real" meaning of a work of art; and that this can never be known, as it resides somewhere between the artist's intention and the individual's observation. To Duchamp, even the artist himself could not say "This is what it means."

While there's certanly a place for computers and science in other aspects of art, to try to use them for interpretation is simply a misunderstanding of what art is really about.

If Sober hated The Godfather, he would plan the attack for, well, today. Vito Andolini Corleone -- aka The Godfather -- was born on December 7th. Robert Duvall's character is Tom Hagen, the adopted son and family consigliere (advisor). He was only briefly the Don (making him The Godfather) in Part II while Michael Corleone goes to Miama and Cuba.
