Who's your quality hosting provider? How many racks do you rent for your high traffic needs?

  2. Dude, where's my civics class? on White House Wins On Spying, Telecom Immunity · · Score: 1, Insightful

At what point in time did we just throw away all the core fundamentals of government and replace them with EULA style legalese ?

I thought the senate/house represented the people of their district/state. Isn't that how's its supposed to be? Since when is at&t, Verizon, and other crooked telco companies considered constituents? I always thought that public voters held the ultimate power - but apparently the ballots us people use are full of hanging chads, multiple votes, and mistakes, while the ballots these corporations submit are green and have a nice portrait of Ben Franklin on them.

I hope I see a government that serves the people in my lifetime.

  3. Why register a known trademark? on Is "coke.ch" A Violation of Coca-Cola's (tm)? · · Score: 0

They have the registered trademark for the word "coke" in a crapload of classes.

They have had the trademark for 50 years, and you register "coke.ch" because its cool? so you can battle?

Have fun. Next time, be more original.

  4. Tough solution. on Ask Slashdot: Building a Large Email Service · · Score: 1

I used to work for USA.NET - the second largest email provider in the world (behind Hotmail).

We used Ultra Sparc 2's for all the web servers, Enterprise 4000's for Oracle, and EMC storage solutions.

The software is custom written. All C. The incoming mail is put into Oracle and on the EMC file system, and the outbound is done with qmail.

Convential pop3/imapd daemons wouldnt work for high load :) So those are custom too.

Maybe a bunch of us should start an open-source solution for email. :)

  5. Someone explain to me trouble? on Compaq Names New CEO · · Score: 1

    What troubles are compaq having?

Compaq has profit. Its a slump, it happens to any big company.

The board directors were running the show until they got a new CEO.

  6. Bah to most of you. on Compaq's CEO Resigns · · Score: 2

After reading all the replies, I'm disgusted :)

Someone replied: "Compaq should be broken up." Good grief! Compaq isnt doing any illegal business practices, nor do they have a monopoly.

50% of the posts consist of "Compaq Sucks, or bla bla". Get real. How many proliants are installed that have failed? I have a P-90 (Proliant) machine thats been on and running for years without a problem. And what brand are you using? The I-pieced-it-from-parts-donated-to-me brand?

The CEO and some crew resigned. Its not the end of Compaq. Its not like the whole employee based walked out, its the upper management.

I think a lot of you are quick to criticize if it isnt VA Research/Red Hat or some other "linux-friendly" computer or software company.

God. 10 years ago it was the Macintosh Religious Group - the people that preached that Macintosh was just. better.

Now its the Linux is just. better.

Kudos for believing in something, I guess. Non-kudos for not keeping an open mind.

  7. Strong Buy on Compaq's CEO Resigns · · Score: 0

And I do work for Compaq/Digital.

We just won a service excellence award, and we're trucking as usual.

Compaq isnt going anywhere. Compaq's not stupid. Their consumer market machines might "suck", but look at the target market. Its for your average/new home user that walks into Best Buy.

The high end servers are still tip-top, and Compaq is still #2 (behind IBM).

And supposidly, we are going to be supporting Linux sites soon.

  10. I cannot BELIVE the gall of Linux Idiot #1 on Review:Wing Commander · · Score: 1

I'm sorry. How long have you been doing computers?

Wing Commander was a very innovative game at its time. In fact, anyone with class, and roots, would appreciate this movie.

I'm sorry your parents allownace didnt warrant better equipment in the day. But you talk like your some bigshot actor or director, your not.
Stick to what you know, linux preaching, broke databases, and your intel i-wish-i-was-a-real-server archetiture.

If you have the odasicty to insult a movie that has roots in the computer world, you obviously are new to the scene.

And who cares about your stupid linux ports. I dont. Software is software, and at least Chris Roberts has the talent to make a game that was innovative, and get it into a movie.
