  1. Re:Windows 1.0 vs Macintosh (but where's = ?) on Pirates of Silicon Valley · · Score: 1
If we want to look at the movie's historical accuracy (which has already been pointed out as somewhat lacking), then what about Commodore? As a competitor to both Apple and the early PC's, Commodore had tremendous success with the =64, which I believe sold more home computers than anything else. The Amiga was a contemporary of the Mac, and was superior to anything available on the market for home use at that time (IMHO).

Commodore failed largely due to the fact that they were horrible marketers, and couldn't get the advertising thing going.

A more honest portrayal would have shown the Apple II squared off against Commodore, with Commodore's PET losing out to the Apple II in the education world, but the
It looks like the movie focused on Jobs and Gates, simply because they are two names that people have read in the WSJ, Newsweek, etc... I personally found that Woz's character was completely underdeveloped, the same being true for a number of Gate's support characters.

Overall, not terrible entertainment, but I do have to wonder if there isn't a hidden agenda in the movie, as it portrays Jobs as a slave-driving, egocentric, slightly unhinged guy, and gates as a clever opportunist, who was justified in copying apples GUI design simply because Jobs got the idea from Xerox.... But maybe that's just the conspiricy buff in me ;)

Oh yes, they also left out the section where Linux emerges from the shadows, and attains total world domination 8)

    FYI RE: OpenBSD

I've been an OpenBSD user for several years, and have not had any problem with stability (at all). The real issue with OpenBSD is that it is a fairly small and highly technical community, meaning it can (at times) be difficult to get support for new users. This is improving however.

The comments about OpenBSD being less stable than the others is not deserved. (I will, however, note that FreeBSD is the best performing, mainly due to it's x86 specificity).

Did anyone want to cry "BULLSHIT" when Katz stated

At best, they can move up to programming, Web development and design, the management of computer networking systems, and easily make $150,000 to $200,000 in almost any big city in the world.

I understand that there is high demand for good technical people today, but $150-200k is a bit more for programmers/web designers/network managers than I've seen anywhere in the industry. If they are working as independent consultants, there's a chance they could bill that much, but there's also a good chance that their educational background will be called into play. Most of the jobs in our sector I've seen in the $150-200K range have been CIO type positions, where non-MBA types may be, but they are certainly the exception, rather than the rule...

I wish both Jesse and Eric the best of luck, but hope that they'll take the opportunity they have and grow up a bit... Software theft and Music theft are still theft... With much of music, and in the game industry, lack of sales (due to pirating) does have a direct impact on the creator/developer.

  4. Not much info... on Cool Computer Cases Continue · · Score: 1

I don't know about this site... A large ammount of info about the cases isn't shown (AT/ATX, PRICE, etc), and I can't figure out what all the space on some of the bottom models is used for.... Maybe those folks will read this and address some of those things.

Also, when is someone going to come up with some really kick-ass rack mountable cases??
