  1. Re:Blame Obama! on Feds Ban 'Buckyballs' Magnets · · Score: 1

I caught that too. Im not a fan of the Big O but that claim came off as a bit whiny. Still the claim has some merit. Appointing Marietta Robinson to the commission broke the commission deadlock in favor of the Democrats, a good thing if you're a Dem, a bad thing if you're a Rep, and a bad thing if you think government deadlock is healthy. Also it's notable that Robinson is a torte lawyer specializing in medical malpractice, and donated heavily to both the DNC and Obama. Not that the GOP doesnt do the same thing, but Obama did actually promise he would stop the practice of handing plum appointments to lobbyists and political donors.

The most disturbing thing (I think) is that the CPSC is adopting a practice of shutting down retailers and distribution channels without going through the trouble of actually declaring a product as unsafe or hazardous, which denies businesses (and consumers) of their legal due process. I can more or less live with government regulation as long as it is subject to the rule of law, that there is accountability, and there is legal recourse.

Thanks for links, and it's something to think about. It seems credible, but a few thoughts to add. One is that the suit is being brought by police and (if I read it correctly) by 'real' K9 handlers complaining about shills used to violate procedures. Maybe that's a good sign. Another is that I doubt the 'handlers' responsible for abuse were actually trained handlers - a dog that is mistreated while performing a set task will never properly do that task again. Not to say it doesnt happen but its an incredible waste of time and money by the police department to screw up a perfectly good dog when there are much easier ways to violate your civil rights. The handlers I know would quit the force rather than abuse their dogs, but Im a long long way from Vegas.

Citation please? I have a K9 dog, I know some trainers and Im friendly with a few policemen with K9s, and I've never heard of such a thing. I could be wrong or uninformed so I'd yield to a citation, but without one and having seen the dogs and trainers and handlers in action I dont believe it without confirmation. The bit about "most dogs react to food smells" is utterly false though, being distracted by a nice juicy steak is the fastest way to get a dog kicked out of any training program, and a working dog has very little interest in food when performing a task. The average cop may not give a rats ass about people, but a K9 handler training their dog to "lie" is disrespecting the dog and I dont know a single handler that would do that ever.

Still, they will call my cell but not my home number. I think there is a persistent attitude that calling a cell phone is just another work number, but calling a home number is an intrusion that one only does in a real emergency. Which it is (an intrusion) and isnt (a real emergency). And no one needs to know that the coverage is so bad largely because my cell phone is left in my car and more than likely turned off.

That report is pretty old though, so I'd like to see some more recent numbers. Without them I have to assume your numbers are totally bogus though... there just arent that many people in that bracket, they tend to be pretty good at avoiding taxation, and actual revenue never meets projections (well, projections made by politicians anyway, the CBO gets it right more often than not but the politicians ignore those projections).

Maybe if upgrades were linked to a new 2 year contract the carriers would take upgrading more seriously. Of course people would riot, but then again the average sheep doesnt seem to complain about these abuses any more than they complain about dropped calls, low data rates, and piss-poor call quality. Im dumbfounded that no one has seriously sued any of the carriers over failure to support existing contracted customers with sufficient towers and software updates.
