  1. Re:Worse? on Human Water Use Accounts For 42% of Recent Sea Level Rise · · Score: 1

If at some point in the future sea levels rise by a meter or so, flooding might become a common event in Boston

Dont disagree with any of your post. But (maybe OT) the Boston Globe ran a front-page story a few years ago with a map of Boston showing it mostly under water. The article and caption said the map was a projection of the effects of sea level rise due to global warming (over 50 years IIRC). There was no other explanation of the map in the article. I finally found the source of the map in a research article that explained it better... yes it assumed worst-case sea level rise from GW, but coupled with a category 5 hurricane storm surge at peak high tide. A projection not taking GW into account showed little difference. It's an example of terrible reporting and fear-mongering, even though it was factual and possibly not even intentionally misleading. It's a good example of the need to be skeptical over any claims from either camp, and that skepticism isnt always 'mocking'.

I went to debunk your Venice claims but far as I can tell its not wrong. Venice is sinking faster, or slower, or not at all, due to aquifer depletion, water composition, foundation decomposition, or tectonics. All depending on which study you read last. But sea level rise does seem to be the significant factor far as I can tell. However I took the comment about "geologically stable tide gauges" as a reasonable caveat to avoid cherry picking data from differing inputs, something both pro- and anti-GW camps have been known to do.

Awesome! I can have *my* eldest file a lawsuit against the plaintiffs, since if they use *any* electricity, fossil fuels, or manufactured products, they are as culpable as anyone else. If they can prove damages against them the same evidence proves they have damaged everyone else. This way we can expedite turning this into the circus side show it's predestined to become. And, if these kids are looking for a 'learning experience' then they can learn how screwed up the legal system is and how much it sucks to have it turned against them.

I'll have to read it a few more times but I think I get it. Interesting idea but Im not convinced it cant be gamed against the little guys. Im also not sure it allows for a fair hearing on merits if the dispute is genuine, both for the small company and big company (giving small companies unfair advantage would be even worse than what we have now). But I do like you're line of thinking.

Another approach might be to adopt some form of SLAPP legislation (see wikipedia) which can be invoked if a plaintiff or defendant can make a reasonable case that the other party is abusing the legal process with the primary intent to harass or outspend. I havent done a lot of research but I've heard cases that SLAPP has been very successful in protecting litigants from incurring obscene legal costs. The problem, as always, is getting a legislature to act against the interests of the legal and megacorp lobbies.

No, the only plan I can come up with is to sell your patent to a troll with cash reserves in exchange for something like 10% of their winnings if they successfully sue MS. Lunacy like that is where we are headed, the blood sucking lawyers will make sure of it.

Ive had maybe a dozen fail in the last 5 years. I'd say that most of them were 100W-equivalent lamps in open sockets or ceiling flood fixtures, both places where heat shouldnt be a problem (both heat buildup and ambient temperature). The failed ones all seem to have been subjected to high heat with lots of discoloration around where the glass bonded to the shell. I always assumed, correctly or not, that the internal switching supplies just turned to junk after a few years of use due to cheap components. Other bulbs on the same circuits in similar fixtures havent died, so while it could still be dirty power that wouldnt be my first guess. Occam's Razor says cheap components and cheap manufacturing processes... wouldnt be the first time cheap solder flux absorbed water or corroded a connection, or that a manufacturer skipped a PCB wash step knowing a failure was at least two years out.
