Sounds great doesn't it, everyone lives. Except the fact that they had a disabled plane after the wings were clipped by the chinese plane, and as a result could not destroy the data before landing. They attempted to destroy it after landing but did not have enough time before they had to surrender themselves and the aircraft. The Chinese did dismantle it for study before shipping it back in pieces. If the plane was stable enough fly from over the ocean to a Chinese airfield and land, it was stable enough to jump from. The expensive plane was already extensively damaged, if you think it's been put back together and is back in service, think again.

While it may be possible for them to retrieve data from a smoldering wreck of a plane, much more of the equipment would have been destroyed.

Shane Osborne was in the AirForce - not the army. Some people called me a troll, not surprising amongst the /. crowd. Most of my family works for or has worked for the AirForce and my beliefs are not all that uncommon in those circles.

Obviously he was on spy mission, and he turned over top secret information by not being able to destroy it, just to save his own neck. did they forget about the DOS exploit in 1.0.7? I've been watching daily for an update and there still isn't one. Firefox sells itself on security. Everyone rails on microsoft for being slow to respond or ignoring threats in IE, but it seems like the firefox team is taking a page out of that book. At very least they've dropped the ball here. I can see not being quick to fix (and release an update) for a security hole in Beta software, but 1.0.x is supposed to be the stable production version.

  12. It's Simple on Microsoft to Charge for FAT File System · · Score: 1

Using a different filesystem is an all well and good way of avoiding that payment to microsoft, however these people will now have to write a device driver for windows to support the new format. This means that the flash storage industry now has to install software in order to use the devices, which makes less attractive for the consumer. Manufacturers are going to buckle to Microsoft just to maintain the ease of use.

Just another example of how Microsoft is leveraging it's monopoly of the desktop OS market to pressure other companies into paying them. When people bought floppies, Microsoft probably encouraged the manufacturers to have them Pre-Formatted FAT. Then again, that probably predates the confirmed monopoly.

  13. Zenworks Imaging Engine on Experiences w/ Drive Imaging Software? · · Score: 1

I work in a college environment, and we use the Zenworks Imaging Engine. It is a linux based CLI and it can natively read/write NTFS filesystems. It supports both Unicast and Multicast. I even wrote a simple bash script and put it on the boot cd to do backups in the format of machinename-date.zmg They have a windows based utility to add/remove files from the image after you've created it. The only drawback to this solution vs something like ghost, is that it does require a server running E-directory. If your Novell shop it's a great fit, if your not it might be a bit pricy to get E-Directory and Zenworks.

I tend to be the type of player who never likes to sign off. Since my characters age doesn't really mean anything, this is ok. I run TinyFugue in a Screen, and then I can attach from anywhere and just continue where I left off. Try that with zMud or MushClient.

  15. Qwest Service on Telecommunication Customer Service Worldwide · · Score: 1

I recently moved, and in the move I wanted to try to keep my DSL downtime as short as possible. The telephone was in my roommates name, while the ISP was in my name. This I figured would work in my favor. 2 weeks before my move, I called Qwest to get phone service in my new apartment. Everything on the surface seemed to go well - I even got my phone number of choice (or I thought). 3 days after the call I was supposed to have service, 5 days after the call, I called qwest about it. Apparently they assigned me a telphone number that was already in use - and then reassigned me another number without notifying me what the number is. I immediately asked to have my number changed to something else - which they allowed. It took 5 days due to a weekend and memorial day. No big deal. I moved in 4 days later. I called my ISP to have them submit a request for DSL on my line and due to the phone number mistakes they still were unable to do that today. Apparently Qwest does not give them the same access to the available numbers as they do thier own reps. I called Qwest not even an hour after I checked with my ISP, and the rep for Qwest was able to schedule my DSL to be provisioned by next Monday.

Point: I tryed to start the process early, and their mistakes made me be a week late.

I am afraid to see the bill, as I am sure they will have charged me for all of thier mistakes.

While the money offered here is good (assuming it's not the sole source of funding), The students needs need to come first. At the moment most textbooks that ship CD's are only in win32 format. The professors demand that I install *HORRIBLE* vertical market software. One example, The software for the CLEP program, requires a win32 based workstation and server. As a Novell & Linux shop we groaned as we installed a Win2K Server. From what I understand there is only one vendor making CLEP software and due to the security the perceive they need over the tests. It is written in Java, but has proprietary win32 dependacies. They don't want to hear that I want a Non-Microsoft version. They told me that.

Another issue that College/Universities have to deal with is Faculty backlash. While students may complain, the voices are not heard nearly like those of the Professors. Sometimes Teachers are the worst students. Many resist the change as long as possible. When we setup classes for them to learn something new, they often don't sign up, or do not attend.

I work at a Small College with approximately 4500 students. We have had our share of problems with both students and faculty whom want to use the P2P systems. Monitoring the usage of our Internet connection, we decided to increase it by 50%, within 10 seconds it was completely consumed. I couldn't even read slashdot anymore due to my packets being dropped. We tryed to block ports, and while it worked (mostly!) there was a massive uprising within the student population. "It's our 'RIGHT' to be able to download" was a quote in the school newpaper (tabloid). The administration would not support us in our quest to stop these applications, even though we received several threats from the RIAA and Sony each week. Students were threating to leave the school, and with enrollment being down school administrations don't like that.

Our solution: We purchased a Packeteer Traffic Shaper (neat hardware!). With it we not only set rules, but we also purchased it with multiple interfaces so we could segment off our dorms. That 50% bandwidth we purchased earlier, we dedicated to our dorms, and the rest to the academic network.

Movies and Music can now be downloaded again, but they don't come down nearly as fast, plus we can give priority to web and email. (We even give online games higher priority then P2P)

Not so much of a cheap solution, but it's cheaper then bandwidth.
