What does a comparable Linux Box Cost?(add in the cost of WebObjects, or something comparable)
How about a comparable NT box?

  2. Change perspective on Motorola sues Intel · · Score: 1

    Look at it this way...

You have your brand new start up firm. You and one employee(to keep it simple). Lets call this little company Transmetta for the sake of argument. You come up with this brillient idea, that will totally reshape the industry(lets call it a quantum CPU). You tell your one employee all the details. Intel finds out your working on something big. Intel offers this employee millions in benifits and pay. He defects. How much do you trust your quantum CPU secrets with the only othere person in the world hwo knows about them, whos now over at Intel???

Ive signed non-compete agreements in the past, and i feel its perfectly allright. Ive know a lot of sensitive information and business practices that would sure help some compettitors, but look at the company you would be leaving, and how much time and resources were poured into this stuff, and it seems only fair. You may not even think about it when you go to another company. You know all this stuff, and it will eventually come out or affect your work. I think 2-3years is good.

  3. Ram folks on Playstation 2 Specs · · Score: 1

You missed the point. Be it one polygon duplicated 55 million times or 55 million different polygons, it still takes ram to store the coordinate data, and its still 55 million polygons. The question is "How much". I know I can get a one million polygon model going in formZ, but it takes a boatload of ram. I just want a good ram/polygon ratio(ie, if it had a total of 32mb ram for just model data, how many poly could actually be stored in ram to be worked on).

  4. Real World POLYGONS on Playstation 2 Specs · · Score: 1

Oh yeah, the actual poly count for the machine will be 4 to 6 mil(but truly overinflated by maketing). Its not how much it could do that counts, it how much it will...

  5. Ram folks on Playstation 2 Specs · · Score: 1

How many megs does it take to describe/display 55 million polys(just the data, excluding textures, effects, AI, etc)? Ill bet a whole lot more then will be in a console(at least in the near future). Heck, even a million takes up a lot, then throw in textures, movement routines, AI, special effects, and what not, all in a max of 32mb ram(my high end estimate) and id say youd get a max of 3 to 5 mil(probably WAY over on this guess) with some effects on. This is totally a HYPE machine.

Do you think they can release this for under $200 with DVD, 32mb ram, this processor, and all the other stuff? Doubt it. And what about the development enviroment? Sure, the WinCE based Dreamcast is in with MS, but it sure does make those PC games eiaser to port :)

    My bet on the PSX2.
Arrives winter 2000 in japan(unless they already have a TON of games done, which I doubt), 2001 in the US

it will have a total of 32mb ram

    DVD

    retail--$250

  6. OS-X on the great guassian curve... on After Linux-Apple? · · Score: 1

First, go to MacOSRumors for the latest on the MacOS X kernel. Apple has some of the smartest people in the industry churning out what appears to be the most complete and robust OS yet. The first OS allowing you to both use the best UI AND go down to the command line. Finally and Apple os that uses the PPC to the max, with a fast, responsive UI, great dev tools, tons of features, all the buzzwords and then some, Quicktime, OpenGL, AppleScript, and lots more. When this comes out, i defy ANY ONE who posts here not to at least want to try it once.

It will turn the heads of NT-Centric IT folks

It may finally bring respect to Apple from the *NIX camp.

It will have the highest adoption rate of any OS when it comes out. Fancy boxes aside, this OS will sell hardware. Fast. I cant wait to benchmark it...

  7. Yosemite PCI on Apple Announcements · · Score: 1

It actually has 4 PCI slots

    1 64-bit 33mhz for the video card
    3 32-bit 33/66mhz slots left empty

these high badwidth slots can easily accomodate a PCI expansion chassis with 3,7, or 11 slots(also rumord to be coming out following the same design and the tower) and have space in these for disk arrays. Most mac users dont need more then 3 extra slots. If your going to upgrade the video card then take out the old one. Besides, most PC's only have 3 or 4 pci slots anyway, and they ALWAYS have to be used for things like SCSI, Video, and the like, so I dont see what that one poster was complaining about. There are plenty of drive bays, and lots of space for ram(a gig of 100mhz 10ns ram sounds good to me). Finally, a well rounded machine from apple.

And lets here it for what should be the BEST implementation of OpenGL.
