  1. Re:Two generatrions of safety engineering on Computer Security, The Next 50 Years · · Score: 1

I am not a pilot or an expert in flying in any way, but I am fairly certain that planes always land and take off with the flaps extended. This allows for a much slower speed while not causing the aircraft to reach its stall speed (where the plane falls out of the air). It has something to do with aerodynamics obviously, of which the details elude me. Perhaps the pilot that was referred to forgot to retract the flaps after take-off in order to reach cruising speed.

  4. IT departments should do it like steel companies on Is There Still Racism in IT Hiring Practices? · · Score: 1

i recently left a job at a steel company. when they decide if they are going to hire someone they put them to an actual test...they hire welders if they can sit there and weld a vertical weld without it being a crappy weld. IT departments should follow this procedure and only hire people who can fix real world problems such as figuring out why a certain computer wont boot and endlessly reboots because a certain USB harddrive was plugged in. or if they can figure out how to open a simple ascii file named .doc when the computer doesnt have microsoft office (yes use any text editor). these examples seem very simple but its small stuff like this that can determine whether you are experienced enough to make it in a company or fall to the wayside as someone who got their MCSE for 20K dollars and doesnt know anything about how computers actually work.

So if i put on my webpage in big bold letters "IMPEACH BUSH" and somehow it gets a lot of national attention, and i dont sign my name to it, i can be arrested and fined/imprisoned? sounds more and more like we are headed to a dictatorship. Who wants to bet that Bush ammends to the next patriot act renewal that presidents can extend their own terms while fighting a war on terrorism? Bush or his "advisors" (daddy) are raping the constitution and bill of rights almost daily.

  7. Well in my area... on Does Faster Broadband Matter? · · Score: 4, Interesting

my isp (Verizon, which is the huge phone company here) is planning on converting all of the DSL lines to FIOS (fiber optic) to allow like 24mb speeds. they are doing this to offer cable TV as well as internet and phone service all through one handy dandy line. This will be great since there are no cable companies in the area so I have no cable TV but do have broadband internet. I say bring on faster speeds, they will bring me TV channels and allow my web/mail server to run alot faster.

i know my ISP currently blocks any incoming port 80 traffic so i cant easily host a webpage. of course i host one anyway and my dns provider kindly reroutes http traffic to the port of my choice. what makes me mad is that before i figured out that 80 was blocked i called tech support to help me figure out why i couldnt access my page they explicately said that they DO NOT block any ports. so they lied to my face even though im paying for a service. its really burns me because i happen to use the biggest dsl provider in the area and they lie right to my face.
