  1. Re:A quart of water into the monitor on Your Most Damage-Resistant Hardware? · · Score: 1

A very similar thing happened to me.

I have an SGI Indigo workstation, in addition to this wintel box. IBM VGA monitor. Both monitors were on a table in my basement, tower cases under the table out of the way, and since I was using it as a server, the SGI was always on.

A valve overhead developed a leak and, over the course of a weekend, dumped a gallon or so through *both* monitors.

Left 'em to dry out for a week, and they both came back okay.

    Hardware can be fun.

No map to follow, and since they'd never planned to return after the first trip, they had to wander around for several hours to find the rock again.
With a GPS code in the original picture, the only problem would be figuring out which CD-R the picture was on!

Call Jayco or Coachmen and ask for a bid to build a double-pop-out. That's a motor home where both sides slide out, creating a much larger (almost square) internal space. This should get you 8 or more "workstations", plus A/C, generator, "plumbing", etc.

As for the kit itself, I'd use something standardized, off-the-shelf, and reliable. If I were doing it, I'd get some nice Dell Optiplex boxes since they'll boot Linux, Win(whatever), or anything else you'd want. Possibly a couple Macs as well, not sure.

Make SURE whatever you use has removable hard drives, and get gel suspension storage to hold the drives when the mobile is "rolling".

Seriously, though - the Wright Bros. weren't the first flyers, they were the first heavier-than-air flyers. The lighter-than-air (hot air balloon, helium, hydrogen) craft had been around for quite some time.
Exploitation of an idea always requires both a workable idea (duh!) and an obvious reason to exploit it.
Air travel had both - hot air balloons were used for battlefield recon as far back as the civil war, heavier-than-air meant much smaller and faster craft (sharks vs. whales) in the air. It's also a lot faster.(To quote the boxtops "Gimmie a ticket for an aeroplane - ain't got time to take a fast train".)

Now, we know space travel is a cool idea, but we haven't quite figured out the benefits yet. Sure, we could have built a base on the moon (and I wish we had!) but the how must wait for the why, and cool isn't enough.

After doing that for a year, I started learning Unix, first on some anchient DEC kit (this was pre-'99) and later on some SCO boxes.
When I was "offered" a job (take it or take the door) writing VB for Windows NT 3.51, I quit and landed a new gig as an admin/programmer.

First, MS hasn't put as much into R&D as they have into mergers & acquisitions. Buying up companies that have a new idea isn't called research, it's called stifling competition.

You also dispute the original article's assertion that there are no real alternatives. Yes, there is Linux. Yes, I use it. No, it's NOT ready for the corporate desktop. It's closer this year than it was last year, though.

As for OpCO jacking the price, they would be foolish to try it, although I suspect they will. The big advantage of Linux is that it has no cost. RedHat or Caldera or SuSe (to pick 3 in no order) provide a convenient package, and they pre-test for compatabilty, and provide support. That costs $$$, say about 1/3 to 1/4 of what WinME costs. Sure you want to make it 1/8?

Finally, keep in mind this is the first time MS has been up against a competitor they can't buy and can't beat for price points. It should be interesting...
