That was my thought, merging at this point would just be confusing. However, changing LibreOffice to actually be the Latin root would be a welcome change, if only for the people who don't know that it isn't named after an astrological sign.

The same thing goes for the remastered version of the original Star Trek episodes on Bluray, you can see all sorts of things that you hadn't noticed before.

  3. Re:Why have CD's held on so long on Why Has Blu-ray Failed To Catch Hold? · · Score: 1

I disagree with that. It's more telling of the lack of concern for the people having to listen to the music. The fact that Vinyl is still around is much more telling, CDs did have an advantage over vinyl in terms of both quality and durability, but that all got pissed away so that albums could be made louder and louder. There's no particularly compelling reason to believe that vinyl actually sounds any better to your average consumer, even with good equipment. And most of the time they're using crap equipment anyways rendering the point moot.

Additionally, the fact that so many albums come with 10 crap tracks and maybe 2 good ones, if you're lucky, and usually it's more like 8 and 2, people probably wouldn't be buying MP3s in the numbers they are. Remember that you can't buy just one track off an album in CD format.

  4. Re:Gloss over them, if you can on Are We Suffering Origin Story Fatigue? · · Score: 1

The Joker doesn't really have an origin. At least not one that's been agreed upon, it's changed several times and due to the nature of the character adding a new one every few years is reasonable. The Dark Knight did spend a bit on his origins, IIRC, at least one of the choices was in the film. But in general doing origins for a character that hasn't really got reliable origins in the series is a waste of time for something that's either not important to most viewers or going to piss off the comic fans who have a favorite one.

  5. Re:Spiderman on Are We Suffering Origin Story Fatigue? · · Score: 1

For well established franchises, I really don't get the point of doing the origins again. However for ones that are less known in the mainstream like Hellboy was, I think it makes sense. But it also depends how much there is to it, Spiderman doesn't deserve any origins more than a very quick bit, radioactive, spider, because quite frankly his origin sucked.

As far as I can tell that's how Amazon's Mechanical Turk works. I looked into it when it was new, but found that the prices were low enough that it was basically slave labor, so the only folks that are actually doing the work are either too stupid to know that they're being cheated or from some part of the world where a dollar a day is good money.

I don't think it's a valid analogy, doesn't Google's ToS have something to say about tricking people into clicking on your site? And if not, I'd be surprised how long until they add it. Trying to create a company on the basis of defrauding advertisers isn't something that screams good investment to me, but then again I don't own a Ferrari yet, so I could be wrong.

And if you're being somewhat more liberal with the term HDD, then there are others which deal exclusively in SSDs, which isn't what you were getting at, but should be imporatant in the future. With the list getting that short of manufacturers it's probably that we'll start to see stagnation. Whereas up until now it seems to mostly just be quality that's been suffering instead of performance and capacity.

Mergers haven't been about the consumer in a very long time. Chances are that if you're hearing about a merger and aren't deeply embedded in a regulatory agency or on Wall Street that it's not something that's going to be good for the consumers.

Mergers are like sending jobs offshore, it's got nothing to do with providing a better product or one that's cheaper, it's all about lining the pockets of the executives that did it.
