When I was looking around for a 3d modeler, I tried Blender after I tried Maya PLE. Two big mistakes on my part.
With Maya it was hard to do anything meaningful, but with Blender, it was hard to do anything. I even remained confused while following tutorials.
If Blender is getting easier to use, maybe I'll try it again, but on my computer it could never replace Wings 3d completely.

I'd suggest super monkey ball for the GCN. It's easy to grasp and is neither competitive nor cooperative yet fun for both people.
