My point to that original post is that no matter what you do, Microsoft isn't going to make it easy to access OWA using any browser but their own. They used ActiveX to do that this time around. If somebody came up with an ActiveX compatible browser extension, they'd figure out another way to jam up Firefox/Opera/Safari, whatever. I'm not ignoring the problem, and yes, I do realize what a pain in the ass it is - I'm a network/system admin who uses Exchange 5.5, 2000, and 2003 for several sites - and I've known from day one that OWA looks like shit using any browser but IE - but there it nothing you or I can do it, except this:

Don't use Exchange, and complain loudly about this problem. Only then, when a majority of MS customers stop using Exchange, will they change.

I don't see this happening any time soon.

There is no such thing as DHTML (as others have said many times, DHTML = Javascript + HTML + CSS) - all they mean is that Firefox doesn't support JavaScript and CSS properly, which is crap. It does. You have to understand who writes Outlook Web Access... Oh, right. Microsoft. Gee, imagine that their webmail doesn't work in anything but IE, I never would have guessed. The real test is to visit that using Opera which spoofs the IE user agent. I'm curious to see what happens then.

I hear this argument a lot, and you're right - it would work... but here's the thing - If you put a pentium I computer with a 2 gig hd or something up in front of an entire lab for internet access, I would wonder about the reliability. What I mean is, at work here I was doing something similar - but when the non-rendundant power supply in the 1995 based computer died, my entire part of the office lost net access, which is bad.

There is always something to be said about having a real server act as a firewall. For home use, sure, use an old computer running linux - but for anything that you would like to count on a reliable, get a real piece of hardware to put that linux distro on, and you'll be happier.

I have some dell notebooks at work with ATI cards in them, and the drivers are horrible, and that's being nice... Half the time the machines start up, they revert back to 800x600 res and insist the driver is corrupt. I download a newer version, install, reboot and they might work fine for a month. Then it happens again. I hate ATI for this, and I also had a lot of AiW cards back in the day - half the features on the box didn't work yet, due to driver support. I felt ripped off and lied to by the marketing department because the card couldn't do what they promised me.

What you're talking about - the OC'n with crazy-low temps thanks to extreme cooling... most of the time when things become unstable there, it's due to the massive amounts of power you have to feed a system like that with the higher multiplier. Only time will tell how far AMD can crank the clock speed of the A64. I'm betting my money they easily hit 3 GHZ by year end with the FX chips. SOI and 65 nm should help them reach that mark. I'm not sure what Intel has up their sleeves, but it should be based off the Pentium M architecture if we're lucky.

  19. Re:I've said it once... on Intel Readying Dual-Core Desktop Chip · · Score: 4, Insightful

I don't think you're correct - they don't have to push their cpus at all right now, they have the peformance crown - if they have to, they will increase clock speed. Intel can't move the P4 up to 4 GHZ like they wanted, while AMD can move up a bit. Why do a I say this you ask? Have you seen the power consumption and heat dissipation of the new A64s? I have one running right here - 2.0 GHZ, Athlon 64 3200+ and it's only running at 30 C. Under full load, it hits 40 C. That's with stock cooling. That's 90 nm, wait until 65 - AMD has PLENTY of head room right now. They just aren't being forced to use it because Intel can't ramp the P4 at all - the 90 nm P4 actually put out MORE heat than the 130.

I agree that competition rules - I'm just not sure Intel will take the lead again... unless they can also incorporate an on-die memory controller like AMD and they license Hyper Transport from AMD, or invent their own. All AMD has to do is shrink to 65 nm and start ramping clock speeds, and they are ensured great performance numbers.
