    They weren't really even 'countries' until the west came in, drew borders, and told the nomadic populations they were now citizens of a country.

    It isn't cutting them down to say this. Probably the old nomdic ways of life on the arabian penensula, to focus on one area, were very rewarding for those who lived it. If the west would butt out, which might be the only solution to the problem, then let the local peoples settle their differences and then reach out for what they want, not what outsiders say they need, many problems might be resolved.

    Granted, probably not in quantities needed to support large urban populations, but we've solved most of the communications problems that necessitated people all crowding into little chunks of land called cities.

    Wwhat we really need is to put all the politicians and urban planners (and the telephone sanitizers, I suppose) into a big arena with lots of weapons and little food and water. Let them figure it out in a real setting, away from their comfortable armchairs.

    Kids now watch the Hunger Games to find their heroes. The big urban centers can FOAD.

    I once daisychained about 100 nine volt batteries out of the discard bin at work. They weren't fresh batteries but they all still had a plenty of charge in them. 900 volts with a few amps of instantaneous current capability is rather terrifying.

    That success doesn't mean it isn't a big shit-hurling ape.

    It's way too late to second guess what we would have if the big hairy ape hadn't prevailed and didn't dominate. But there probably wouldn't be the overwhelming stench of apeshit we've all been forced to be accustomed to.

    It probably pays well, being that close to the ape shit.

      I'm sure there are some people who participate on this forum who receive a significant part of their income from maintaining "The Cloud". The rest of us can speak freely on the matter and say No.

    I can't afford to hate corn farmers. If they stopped farming corn on the hundreds of acres across the road from my house, tract housing would probably break out on it. The corn isn't infested with little damn kids and brite-n-shiney suburb types.

    Google should make provision for ApplePay on android devices. Then, when Apple won't allow Google's payment app on iOS, it's time for an anti-trust investigation. Google can incorporate an authentication mechanism as powerful if possibly slightly less convenient, as Apple's thumbsmudge method.

    Can you put the above mentioned smart card reader apps into a kind of promiscuous mode? It would be interesting to have your android device in your pocket in a crowded bus or elevator to see what info it could capture.

    It's mostly only the Apple enthusiasts who try to define that divide. Apple has always promoted the notion of an ' versus them' mentality. With the Apple customers,defined as a superior minority. That has been their strategy for decades.

    The rest of us just use the equipment that seems most suitable and fits in our budget.

    I have been maintaining that the characters in the show BBT would never watch the show. I don't either. The people I know at sork who watch the show and are always talking about it aren't nerds or geeks at all.

    The show is patronizing, even offensive, to the people it pretends to depict. That's just how TV works.

    So what you're saying is Apple tried to be like Google and have failed at it. Not for lack of trying, but they just aren't any good at it. As Apple is traditionally a one-product wonder-company it isn't surprising.

    I recently started trying out a Nokia (you can buy the whole thing for $48 and get on an unlimited data plan for $30/mo at WalMart) and one of the things I've noticed, as a previous Apple and Android user is the limited amount of surveillance that Microsoft does. It's not necessarily that they aren't doing stuff behind the scene, but you don't hear that heavy breathing behind every facade a spy could hide behind, as is the case on Apple and Google platforms. Probably Microsoft is 'too dumb' to monetize that shit properly, or perhaps they're a different flavor of evil. It's an interesting difference, still.

    That's not much better than Apple, who consider their user base 'followers' in the elron hubbard sense. 'Customers' to Apple are the reviewers at websites and the buyers at BestBuy, WalMart, and Target.

    Then when that's accomplished we plan on stealing 'Adobe' and turn it into a common verb meaning 'a bunch of preening shitbags.'
