My annoyance is that people disregard large amounts of data to promote a personal opinion as the majority opinion or objective fact(welcome to the world), such as stating that PSP has lackluster games(implying no one likes or enjoys them). DS has certain types of games and the PSP has certain types of games, and they really are vanilla and chocolate(IMO).
As any amount of data there are overall patterns. I don't agree with every review, because obviously my taste is different and different aspects of games are of lesser or greater importance to me. But there is a pattern to the reviews of games both critics and consumers(check out the user ratings as well they pretty much back up the critic reviews). They simply don't support that there are 'no good games' for the PSP. They don't appeal to you, much like Mario as a franchise doesn't appeal to me, but I recognize the quality and work that has gone into various genre's and can appreciate that even if to me it's not entertaining.
I think someone else pointed out that roughly:
75-> means the game is good/may have some things preventing a mainstream appeal but people that enjoy that genre should check it out.
80-85-> means that the game has flaws but should appeal to most gamers and is a must have for those that enjoy ths genre
90-100-> means the game has a wide appeal and should be enjoyed by most gamers
Obviously those extremely general, but that's how I take them
I think for the most part those high rated games have earned them (I tend to go with Gamespot's reviews as the seem to be the most indepth and closest to my own opinions, but others may vary). It doesn't mean that I'm going to enjoy Hot Shots Golf (PSP) or MarioKart Racing, but for their areas they are recognized for their quality and appeal to people that like those sorts of games.
I just wish we could stop bashing and just enjoy the games.

Wipeout Pure plays wonderfully on the PSP, and I'm not particularly skilled at racing games, but Burnout works great too. I think the controlls are fine for fighting games like Tekken, though I have not played it... have you played a PSP?
The controls are just fine for me. I have actually gotten more fatigue/contrl issues from my DS, but I think the controls are just fine on that as well.
PSP is a portable CONSOLE.
Why do people get surprised/irritated that PSone and 2 games get sequels and versions on it? This was one reason I bought a PSP, to play console games PORTABLY.
I admit FPS are a bit wonky on it (coded arms is embarrasing next to MP: Hunters in gameplay and control)
The UMD was poorly positioned (obviously all My opinion) and should have been marketed more for rental especially at airports and train stations) The cost of UMDs movies(despite the overhead in making a new and more physically complex format) should have been 5-10 dollars and also included with DVD releases as an option from the start they really should have taken the loss just to secure the format as viable.
Let me say that I love my psp, but I worry about a device like that with a motor driven drive failing, and what it does to battery life and instant playbility. I think the sony engineers did an amazing job though considering these limitations.
Also I have not been particularly gentle with my psp(first gen) and I haven't gotten any scratches on it( knicked it from a drop on concrete, though), compared to my ipod which does. It's pretty impressive considering the ipod has from the moment the screen protector was remove been inside a plastic case.
As for games, I think there's a quite a few good games for the PSP. Metacritic.com actually lists a fair amount more higher rated (Green) games for the PSP than it does for the DS. Your tastes may be different than the critics(I personally have no interest playing any Mario or Sports games, but some lower rated games I love on both sides). I personally want to play both things like Nintendogs and Starwars BattleFront II portably. You can't really do something like Syphon Filter justice on the DS, and you can't do Stylus games on the PSP. I'm not a huge fan of Sony at the moment, and I suppose I am a Nintendo fan, but I think the PSP is a pretty cool little machine. I enjoy for entirely different reasons than my DS.
Games are, unfortunately, as expensive as console games(and as expensive to produce) and are not quite as good as their console brothers, but closer than anything else in terms of production. The psp really is a portable console, and it has games like a console does (which can be a negative thing for some people) that want gameboy type games.
I have a DS (phatty) and I love it too, but it has a very different style of games. I happen to like both, and would be very sad if the PSP died.
I got this game and didn't complete it... well made, good variety of activities/gameplay...
Similar gameplay to anachronox (collecting photos, world layouts etc..) But I really didn't like the characters.. they struck me as Disney-made-for-tv-cartoon-show and just turned me off to the game, I just didn't care after a while. I wanted the pig to die and the rasta rhinos(?)...
On the other hand I loved Anachronox and I'm not really into RPGs... Great story, gameplay, characters, genuinely funny to me... I would love a sequel...
As for Beyond Good and Evil... good game, not for me...
Yes, PSP load times suck, but understandable, if you're starting the game from scratch, but if you have a game in progress and just toggle the standby mode, it's fast and commute friendly... Yes, DS games that have you talking outloud like Nintendogs, Brain Training (there is option to do non vocal training) and such are not very commute friendly... I would say a lot of the stylus games aren't very commute friendly either, as it takes a steady unjostled hand, but it doesn't mean those games are bad.
I think my point is being mssed.
1. 75 is a high rating... it's considered a good game by raters, and is classifed as such by metacritic. Do I agree with all the scores? No, of course not. I love a lot of games that got marginal ratings at best, and other high scorers don't appeal at all (Hot Shots Golf), but I can at least see what the reasons for the ratings were.
Also DS has more lower rated games than the PSP.
2. This is not my personal opinion. I simply stated PSP has more higher rated games as calculated by Metacritic. I'm tired of hearing there are no good games on PSP. This isn't true. Daxter, Syphon Filter, Wipeout, Metal Gear Acid 2, etc all Good games, maybe not interesting to everyone, but for their market they are good quality games.
3. I own a ds and love it. But I don't always want to play those type of games. I own elektroplankton and got bored of it quickly... It's neat and I'm glad someone is going in that direction, but it's not a killer or long lasting game, and the ratings it got I think are fair. It's a niche appeal game.
I don't have an affinity for Mario so none of that franchise is interesting to me. I also do not dig racing games that much, or sports games. However, if Silent Hill exclusively appears on any console, I will buy it. To each their own.
I think PSP has what some would call "unoriginal games/ports" and what others would call true portable console games, which hasn't been done before, and I'm glad they did. It's great for me personally to whip out Untold Legends or Twisted Metal and play it anywhere I want. You realize that was not possible before the PSP. Gameboy and DS games were very different types, (not better or worse, although I am very in favor of new creative game types), but different.
There's nothing on DS like Wipeout, or Socomm, or Syphon Filter, or other console-centric(as opposed to handheld) type games. (Hunters doesn't count, but I do love Hunters very much and it's the best FPS IMHO on a handheld and makes Coded Arms an embarassment).
Maybe you don't enjoy those types of games, others do. That's why I have both consoles, to get fun quirky games and games I might like on a console.
So, again this isn't my personal opinion, it's just statistical fact that PSP has higher number of higher rated games and a lower number of lower rated games according to Metacritic.
I personally don't want the DS to KILL the psp, as I like my psp and games for what they are and I'm looking forward to getting ps1 games for the psp and playing things I missed.

PSP is like a portable entertainment system and a true portable console.. (hence the name)...
The DS is a great game sysem with fun inventive games...
BUT...
if you go to Metacritic.com and look at the number of GREEN (75 or above) rated games for PSP and DS, you'll see that the perception that there are no good games for the PSP is quite wrong(at least by ratings)..
There are 50 games(and one movie?) listed that get a 75 or better score for the PSP, compared to DS with only 33 75 and above.
I'm not going to go into reviews being biased... or that PSP games are mostly updated ports of games etc... I'm just going by reviewed games...
There are more ovrall games listed for the PSP(146) than the DS(122) though, even in the next category of rating they beat the DS for number of YELLOW rated games.
But if anything right now I'm happy with Nintendo and what they are doing, and sort of bewildered by Sony's inability to manage their image these days... and I think the UMD should have been targetted at rentals not sales... like at airports and trainstations...
