  1. Quality vs. Quantity on The MMO Numbers Game · · Score: 1

I'd like to take a moment to remind everyone that numbers are not always best. You can play the most crowded, popular MMO, but it you may find your quality of play degrading as more people arrive. It all comes down to game design and the quality of the environment you play in when determining game quality. I've had some of my best gaming fun on small MUDs with a userbase of only 200-500 or so. That's largely because the environment was well crafted, the players were of good quality, and so were the admins. I've also had a good bit of fun on underpopulated servers on World of Warcraft, a notoriously crowded MMO.

So while I'm definitely not answering the question posed by this thread, please consider the above when comparing your MMO's to one another.

  2. Works for me on Sound Quality of the Fifth Generation iPods? · · Score: 1

I recently bit the bullet and decided to buy an iPod. Went all over the place looking for one near Christmas, finally found the only one in town, the new 60 gig video.

The price tag is a bit high ($400'ish as the time, I'm sure you can get them cheaper) but in my opinion it has been worth it. The sound quality is just fine and I'm able to blast my music without a hitch. Additionally, you can compress videos in a manner to get decent sound quality given you have enough space to do so. I've got about 8 movies on mine with decent quality.

But really, as someone mentioned earlier, unless you're hooking your iPod up to a commercial grade tower or something ridiculous, you probably won't have any problems with the new generation of iPods. They're built well, don't seem to have too much trouble when dropped, and iTunes is a vast improvement over other products like Windows Media Player.

  3. Re:Will Mono achieve what WINE could not? on Fedora Core 5 includes Mono · · Score: 1

I would've never thought that I'd be able to run native Windows games under WINE/Cedega a number of years back, let alone some of the other programs I use. As with most things in Linux and OSDEV in general, it's only a matter of time before protocols and libraries are reverse engineered and implemented as the list of compatibility and features grows in other related tools.

Mono has its uses and I think it's good to see it progress even if I'm not a Windows/Gates fanboy. True cross-platform support is a great thing, and this is a good step in a long journey that may or may not ever have an end.

  4. Re:Nofollow that fellow on On the Matter of Slashdot Story Selection · · Score: 1

Agreed, the reputable submitters have "ran the gauntlet" with the mods and have earned their place. The mod are there to pick good stories that the userbase is likely to take interest in, not to "meet their quota" of ones they need to shoot down. Why lose valid content to a really bad system like that?

  5. I hear you on this one on Computers, Long Hours and Vision Problems? · · Score: 1

I spend at least 10 hours each day staring at a screen of some sort due to school and my hobbies for the better part of 12 years. My eyes weren't wonderful to begin with, but I find myself getting dizzy if I move my head too fast after long bouts of computer use, and my contacts tend to dry up and stick to my eyeballs. Not fun. I don't know what some of the other users are here, but I'm a pretty much blind -7.5 in each eye.

But that's only half of it. The eyes are bad, but the hands are worse :)
