Unfortunately, I'm a game developer so I don't think I'm going to be able to get away with this for long - the DirectX SDK will no longer install to 2k unless you use a version that's a few years out of date.
So ditch DirectX and use SDL/OpenGL/OpenAL for your games.
Hm. Support for r2x0 (8500-9250) cards is actually broken in recent Ati linux drivers. Ati cards are, at least, just as expensive as NVIDIA cards. Midrange-ish NVIDIA cards (7600gt,6600gt...) outperform their Ati counterparts and are generally cheaper.
Or they could stop restricting their customers. Isn't freedom great?
