On Linux, I spill over into virtual memory all the time. Linux also seems to be much worse at switching data in and out of virtual memory. I have no idea what's causing this, but I've definitely noticed it. That would be because Linux is written to use your RAM as to the max. It will keep as much in your RAM as possible. Which is sort of good, considering you probably bought it to use it :-).

For those looking for a multi-track studio, and an alternative to Jokosher or Ardour...

I think Traverso http://traverso-daw.org/ is worth trying, though it's not strictly linux-only. (It claims to do it's thing on OSX & Windows too).
It features non-destructive editing, support for lv2-plugins, an interface (Qt4) focused on soft-selection, etc ...
Oh, and for those interested, the devs are on the verge or releasing a new version. Give it a few days, and give it a shot.

I used to have a laptop with an ATI R250 Mobility card. (Off the top of my head) I can tell you that the last proprietary ATI driver that supports your card, or any card older than R300 (I think) is version 8.24.8. The next version of that driver dropped support for your, and older cards. Either install that version, or go with the opensource radeon driver.
