  7. Godwin's Law on FreeBSD 4.1.1 vs. Linux 2.4 · · Score: 1

Although it is still relatively early in this slugfest, I hereby invoke Godwin's Law. Although frob2600 makes some good points, he was sloppy.

For those of you who don't know what it is:
"As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one."
A excerpt of the explanation from the Jargon File:
"There is a tradition in many groups that, once this occurs, that thread is over, and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever argument was in progress."

You may read up on Godwin's Law from the FAQ.

Strictly speaking, frob2600 did not directly mention the political regime of the third Reich, but I believe that his post fulfills the spirit of the Law's requirement. Namely, in his zealous pursuit of proving his point he feels it necessary to unnecessarily compare the opposing view to one of the world's most hated political groups.

Non-payment to one company will not destroy your credit.

    we WILL garnish your pay,

Employers only listen to courts and the IRS to do this.

we WILL charge you 5% interest per month

That would put you over 22% per year, which is roughly the unofficial limit for credit. Again, courts would strike it down as unreasonable.

and we WILL make your physical address and name public on our 'Spammers Hall of Shame' page.

Said ISP would get sued (and in some parts of the country the plantiff would win) for slander.

That's not my point though, my point is that if the democrats believed that everyone must be counted, then they themselves should have demanded recounts in all counties... to hell with what the republicans think. But, instead they showed their hypocracy in demanding recounts in only their conties and left the others alone. Here and they say that they want every vote counted. They don't want every vote counted, the only want every good, democratic vote counted.

The democrats say. I wonder, if the democrats are so ideological in this argument, then why don't they demand that every county in florida be recounted? And don't say, 'because the republicans didn't agree to.' If the democrats demand that every vote be hand recounted, they should demand that every county be hand recounted, regardless if the republicans go along with them or not. Instead they demand that only votes in heavily democratic counties be counted... I guess only democratic americans deserve to have their ballots scrutinized.

  24. 3dfx's demise: a self-inflicted wound on 3dfx Drops Video Card Division · · Score: 3

3dfx didn't just get mercilessly ripped apart by nVidia like everyone believes, they let it happen. When the TNT2, supposedly the first consumer chip faster than Voodoo2 SLI, came out, sporting 32-bit color, support for over 32 megs of video ram and 2048x2048 pixel textures, 3dfx countered months later with the Voodoo3, which had the 16-bit color and 16-megs of ram limitation of the Voodoo2. That was really the first nail in the coffin of 3dfx. Their relase schedule can also be blamed, because nVidia has a new chip out every year or so, and sells (now sold) them to many different board manufacturers, causing competition. 3dfx makes their own boards, just like ATI.

How is it that, in January, one could buy a dang-fast TNT2 for $60, while the Voodoo2, a slower card, sold for over $100 everywhere? Simple - the different board manufacturers compete with each other, trying to sell their TNT2 board over somebody else's. The 3dfx board manufacturer just tries to sell their boards to Voodoo zealots, who are, for the most part, GeForce believers now.

Hopefully now that 3dfx has decided to go back to being a chip manufacturer, coupled with a shorter release interval (which it looks like they're trying to do), they'll start making some headway into the market. I love nVidia to death, but competition is always good.

Network Solutions no longer has a monopoly on domain registrations, you can go to any of the ICANN members to register whatever domain is not taken. ICANN is not part of the US government either, as the bottem of their website clearly states.
